Following up on Abhi’s post on PETA’s sexiest vegetarian: Ravi Chand, one of the contestants, is exhibit A in why the de facto draft of military reservists is a bad idea. What happens when you take a pacifist from the liberal enclave of UC Santa Cruz and send him to Iraq? Snake eaters turning vegan and naked kissing in the streets, that’s what. Chand makes love and war:
Chand served as a corporal on the crew of an Amtrack amphibious tank. His unit came under direct fire when it was ambushed in the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah, he said… Chand said six Marines went vegetarian and one went vegan. [Santa Cruz Sentinel]Chand, a vegan U.S. Marine, claims vegetarians are sexier and slimmer because they don’t clog their arteries by eating saturated fat. “There’s nothing sexy about gnawing on the corpse of a dead animal,” Chand said. Before going vegan, Ravi did only nominally on… a grueling test in which only the top 1% of the Marine Corps are physically equipped to score perfect on. However, just weeks after going vegan, he noticed huge endurance and strength gains… he scored perfect on the test. He ran the 3 mile run at an avg of 5 min 40 second miles, did 30 pullups, and aced the situp portion. [Animal Voices]
Chand, now a triathlete, is involved in a typical PETA stunt in which he gets paid to make out with a rotating selection of models (ok, I’m slightly jealous):
A crowd gathered… to watch a partially clothed man and woman on a mattress as part of PETA’s 10-city “Live Make-out Tour.” [Lansing City Pulse]
PETA says vegetarianism is steak, not just sizzle:
“The human body is a machine,” [a student] said. “What you put into it is what you get out of it. Vegetarians really are better in the bedroom. My girlfriend doesn’t have any complaints.” [Daily Lobo]
And they apparently employ ’50s-era slogans for housewives:
“What could be more of a turn-on than snuggling up to someone who’s both passionate and compassionate… Try a veggie burger in the kitchen for a whopper in the bedroom!” [PETA]
One school principal complained about PETA cards describing cruelty to chickens, following the Abu Ghraib cycle of dismiss-deny-deplore:
“… I have some objection to cards saying chickens live in their own pee and poop. I’d prefer a better word choice.” Brown was also concerned a computer-savvy child could easily link to PETA’s web site for adults which describes how chickens’ beaks are chopped off while they are alive. Because when we treat live animals as fodder for meat grinders, the most urgent thing to do is to figure out what to tell the children.
By the way, the sexiest vegetarian in America is obviously Kal Penn. Boy, does Kumar love his herbals. Or, as Penn’s off-color character in Van Wilder might say, don’t eat meat — dine at just one American (censored) stand. I don't mean to be dick, but this guy sounds like a tool... Don't get me wrong, I'm all for vegetarianism, but instead of letting this guy talk, PETA should've gotten him to do his thing while holding signs that read:
"Eat like rabbits, f*ck like rabbits."
Now, that would've been persuasive.
I've often wondered why the military doesn't explore things like yoga techniques for endurance, etc (maybe they do?)

Please don't ask me why I was watching this; procrastination most likely. Anyway, only like 20 % of the guys that volunteer to do this program make it through to the end and then they have two more years of training after the inital course. Their job is to rescue people, so they receive a lot of medical training, and they have to be incredibly physically fit to go into a possible hostile area and pull guys out.
Anyway, one of the guys didn't eat enough calories before a swimming test and got so hypoglycemic he totally flipped out - he got delusional. Ravi Chand's experience just goes to show that the types of calories you get and the mix are what is important - it doesn't have to be meat (anyhow, the problem with the guy who got hypoglycemic was that he just didn't eat enough and some people are more susceptible to hypoglycemia for genetic reasons).
Everytime I read one of manish's veggie posts I feel guilty about eating meat. My family ate meat even in India (ok, only my dad and only chicken) but I've gone through periods where I'm veggie plus fish (the omega oils are supposed to be good for the MS, so I kind of think of that as medicine. Self serving, I know......)
I guess a few years after it was founded PETA was not yet a turnstile for self promoters and publicity seekers.

Saurav - because of a few of the documentaries I've seen where they are trying to teach underwater breathing for rescues, how to hold your breath for long periods of time, etc.
Anyway, I've been interested in yoga since being diagnosed with MS - there is some interesting research going on that shows how yoga and tai chi helps with the chronic fatigue of that disease. So, I'm always into learning about new 'applications' for yoga. Just idle curiosity on my part, too :)

Well, how's this then: PETA tried to convince Timothy McVeigh to request a vegan last meal. To which he replied that death is a natural part of the cycle of life. He also told them to contact the unabomber (and made several references to survivor 2).
I personally know Ravi,and I slept on his floor for a week when I first moved to Norfolk to work at PETA. He's a hottie that's for sure! Go Rav!
