Indian soldiers are apparently grossly underfed, and angry enough to eat just about anything:

The two soldiers from India’s Eastern Frontier Rifles were alone in their barracks Wednesday night when Lance Corporal Bhupesh Rava lost his cool because his roommate wanted the lights on for a little while longer. An enraged Rava, who had returned from daytime duty, attacked Sepoy Durga Lama, pinned him down and gnawed off his nose, police said. [Reuters/Yahoo!]

Wow, first we marry trees, now we bite off noses? Bangla people are crazy.

Maybe it's a genetic thing... when I'm EXTREMELY mad at someone, I do feel like cannibalizing them (beating them to death with my bare bands just seems too quaint).

I think I need help.

Yikes Saheli! I was friggin' kidding about it being a genetic thing (although I wasn't about my own cannibalistic tendencies).

I must admit though, the fact that you know population of Bengal (assuming you didn't pull that number out of your ass) was rather impressive.

Google is not my ass. :-) I added WB + Bangladesh. Strictly overcounting, since a ton of nonBengalis inhabit both. But I figure the wider Bangla diaspora counts for that.

Yeah, I know you were kidding, but my nose is still aching in sympathy and it doesn't need to be terrified of its own blood relatives. ;-)

When you say Bengal, do you mean West Bengal or Bangladesh or both? Forgive the ignorance but West Bengalis (indians) and Bangladeshi share the same basic culture (strong literary tradition, relatively matriarichal) and language (Bengali) right? Pretty sure the answer is yes but I'd be intrigued if it were no.

Taking the pains to look up the populations of the nations of Bangladesh AND the state of West Bengal, and then ADDING them together!? Damn Saheli, I woulda just pulled a number out of my ass and hoped nobody would question me. I'm a much lazier person than you are.

Just to clarify Vurdlife, "Bengali", or as I put it "Bangla people", are the people of both regions (West Bengal and Bangladesh). We are culturally very similar, and our languages are the same, minus some dialect differences and the fact that Bangladeshis, being predominantly Muslim, have more words with Arabic roots in their vocabulary.

I'm actually Kolkata (Calcutta) born, but three of my four grandparents were born in the part of the British Empire currently known as Bangladesh. They had to flee to West Bengal due to religious persecution during the Indian Civil War, just as many West Bengali Muslims fled to East Bengal (Bangladesh) during that time.

Since I'm boring you all with my family history, I should probably mention that I'm the only known cannibal in my bloodline, making my theory of genetic cannibalism among my people harder to believe.
