The Dum Maro Dum ProjectHumor

Abhi posted about a collaboration between Asha Bhosle and Kronos Quartet. But has anyone ever told you about Bhosle’s original version of the hippie anthem ‘Dum Maro Dum’?

Here, take a look:

Dum maro dum
Mit jaaye gham
Bolo subah shaam
Hare Krishna, hare Ram

Duniya ne hum ko diya kya?
Duniya se hum ne liya kya?
Hum sub ki parva kare kyun?
Sub ne humara kiya kya?

Chaho jiyenge, marenge
Hum na kisi se darenge
Hum ko na roke zamana
Jo chahenge hum karenge

Dum maro dum
Mit jaaye gham
Bolo subah shaam
Hare Krishna, hare Ram

Take a toke
Let the pain be erased
Say all day and night
Hare Krishna, hare Ram

What has the world given us?
What have we taken from the world?
Why should we care about everyone else?
What has everyone else done for us?

Whether we live or die
We won’t fear anyone
This age will not stop us
We’ll do whatever we want

Take a toke
Let the pain be erased
Say all day and night
Hare Krishna, hare Ram

If you’re getting the munchies, there’s more to chew on here.

Direct from performances in Mumbai, London & New York. To perform the music of her late husband, R.D. Burman. With Kronos quartet. You heard that right. It is probably going to feature the music from their album . You’ve Stolen My Heart: Son...

The second line in the chorus goes "Mit jaye gham" instead of "mit jaye hum". With the change, the line would be best translated as "wipe out that pain".

Dang, it's my 'Louie Louie.' All these years I thought Ashaji was being a nihilist-- it's hard to hear the soft 'gh' in the original recording. Thanks.

If you want to be really picky, it's "Duniya _ne_ hum ko diya kya?".

I'm all for being accurate. You know what's embarrassing? I transcribed the lyrics off a Web site, reading it in the original Hindi. What I conclude from this: that lyrics enthusiast was deaf.

Man, those bad-Hindi-speaking ABCDs really get on my nerves ;)

Kya upar khuttha?

That's how hip-hop ABCDs greet eachother ;)

Manish, nice photoshop work of Ashaji singing in Raag Ganja. :)

The title of this CD reminds me too much of that Black Eyed Peas song that samples some other old Hindi songs -- "Don't Mess With My Heart."

As a result, when I listen to the song on the Kronos Quartet website I keep expecting to hear someone start rapping...

Dum maro dum
Hold it with your thumb
Then pass it along
ashes falling to the ground

"Kya upar khuttha?"

This, along with its Tamil counterpart, is getting passed around at the next family gathering, in lieu of the other banned substance.

*smile*

It is nice to have two new releases from the legend Asha Bhosle. One Asha -Ghazals of Ghazal
Maestros. Atleast in this one we get to hear her
interpretations and that too in her Golden silken voice. However the two preview tracks of her other offering , this one with Kronos ,I do not find anything uniquely different. Haven't we already had her many versions of RD Burman songs released by various record companies ? Asha needs to use her god gifted vocals to create new songs , new compositions. Years ago her album of Ghazals with Ghulam Ali was a masterpiece of a recording that I find it appealing even today and then there was a brand new Kabhi To Nazar Milao with Adnan Sami. Don't you think that we need something new from this very best , a talent that sometimes outshines even the nightingale , her sister Lata Mangeshkar ?

To Nazir: I have always been of the stance that art is either for the audience or for the artist. In the case of Kronos Quartet, hey, it's simple: they probably can't stop giggling because they GET TO WORK WITH SUCH A LEGEND :) So we don't hear anything that innovative (I felt that way about other KQ recordings--it's like they're too good!) but at least they are having fun.

You know in the context of the film this song is actually mocking hippie culture
