Meet Vanita Gupta in DC, SundayLaw

It pays to be on SAJA-DC’s list— look at this event(I’m considering missing church for it!):

A talk and inter-active session with Vanita Gupta, an accomplished lawyer and a young leader. Vanita works at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and won the release of 46 wrongly-accused African Americans in Tulia, Texas. Recipient of the Soros Justice Fellowship, India Abroad Special Award for Outstanding Achievement, 2004 Reebok Human Rights Award, Upakar Foundation Community Ambassador award and American Red Cross “Rising Star” award.

vanita.jpg Though some of you male commenters are fighting over a torrid reality show contestant, if I were a guy, Vanita would be the girl for me. Beatiful inside and out AND she works for liberty and justice for all. Damn. Just typing that makes me consider a love that dare not speak its name, she’s that amazing.

The event is FREE, open to the public and at my (and Mutineer Sajit’s!) alma mater. Oh, and there are snacks, yo.

Date / Time: Sunday, September 18, 2005, 11 A.M.
Venue: Marvin Center, George Washington University,
800 21st Street, NW, Washington DC.
Metro: Foggy Bottom, Blue or Orange lines.

Um, with whom is she debating? Not that I can possibly make it, but I thought I'd send spies.

Thank you, Anna. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm glad I'm not the only one who recognized the superficial obsession in that other post. I agree: some people are way too easily impressed.
Not that I think women aren't entitled to inheireting fortunes etc.; men have been taking over their daddy's companies for zillions of years.... but please let's save our biggest crushes for ladies like these..... I expect some gushing for this girl, dammit!!!

Hey Saheli :)

(I totally feel like meeting you at Greco...November sound good to you?) ;)

I don't think Vanita is debating anyone, I think after her session, the Towson University Debaters are going to argue about the following topic: "Education is a Universal Human Right".

:+:

You're my girl, Angie. You're my girl. :)

If you're in or around NYC, you should come to our next meetup, in October-- then we can gush about her awesomeness together. ;)

Um, can you have her sign a shirt please? I'd probably be as gleeful as I was meeting Salman Rushdie tonight! :)

Anna, I sat behind you at the reading - and I almost came to Indian Bread. Definitely will be at the Oct meetup.

I actually noticed Vanita long before from an NY Times article. She seemed a stellar person, a rising star. From googling a bit, it also seemed at that time that she didn't really needed to go save poor black souls, bless them all, she hailed from a well off family.

I know, I can hardly resist googling Desi names found on mainstream.

Being a gullible, naive Canadian grrl, I have been looking for some tough, street-wise New York City companions and guides (although something tells me I'm more of a Brooklyn grrl at heart).... Sounds like fun! - will see....

you can exhale, too. i'm not at all interested in getting married, so find some other demi-insult (one-woman matrimonial site?)to fling my way.

I was reading the post again to get it and when I came across this ...

Just typing that makes me consider a love that dare not speak its name

and I got distracted. :)

Relax! I know all about the Tulia case. I read Bob Herbert's columns in the NY times. I admit she is pretty amazing.

I hear that Halle Berry is playing her in a movie regarding this case. Amazing. I'm going to try and make it.

Anna,

Right about now, somewhere across the Atlantic, in the middle of deepest London, Punjabi Boy's head is probably exploding....

Here's a previous post about the Halle Berry phillum on Vanita Gupta.
