Goyal’s toilsPolitics

Raghubir Goyal the Foil, the One-Track Uncle called on by White House press secretaries to evade tough questioning, shows up in a Daily Show segment. ‘Go ahead, Goyal,’ says the spokesman.

‘My question is in connection with the Prime Minister of India’s visit on Monday…’ he begins, sidetracking the preceding questions about domestic politics. Old faithful.

A female reporter sits behind him, smirking and exchanging looks with other reporters while he asks a long, bizarre question about whether Dubya agrees with emperor Constantine’s fourth-century Christian theology.

Dude, have a little respect. I think we can safely assume POTUS knows about Constantine.

It had Rachel Weisz and Keanu Reeves and, like, totally rawked.

Dude, that was an awesome piece on the Daily Show- just shows that you guys are ahead of the curve with one-track uncle coverage! I liked the characterization of the press core as "a room full of 3-year olds" asking "Why?" over and over again.

When others tried to jump in, the press secretary asked Goyal if he had a follow-up question. Goyal did, about Pakistani fighter planes…

Well, with the topics here being all things brown, he'd be too appropriate... sans "foil". Not nearly as fun as him coming out of left field.

I told my father, a retired journalist in India, this story; he had a good laugh and an anecdote.

My father was into rural journalism and he would attend Pandit Nehru's press conferences and invariably ask about rural affairs. At one of these conferences, the press were quizzing Pandit Nehru about Marilyn Monroe (for some unknown reason). After a while my dad pipes up, "... well, let's leave MM aside, I have a question about rural affairs..."
