Speaking of temples and apparel, there was a local mandir here that, a few years back, imposed a 'no jeans' policy; based upon my observations during my last visit, it seems to be no longer in effect. (Sure, saris and salwar-kamizes are nice if you drive to the temple from the 'burbs, but what about those of us taking the bus accross the city, and hiking through snow drifts from the bus stop?) I can't imagine that it would be easy for a 'neophyte' sari-wearer (as Britney would be, I suppose) to handle a young baby at the same time. I think she looks pretty 'momly' in these photos, much better than the glammed-up superstar look, IMHO.

It depends on her interpretation of the religion and whether she implements the core humanitarian tenets in her own life, regardless of whether or not she formally adopts the faith. As long as she picked up a non-gimmicky, accurate interpretation of the basic values and practised them properly, it might actually have a positive effect on her.

With all due respect Pattie, if you are going to promote Sikhism in any of your posts, can I politely request you not to simultaneously use that kind of language, especially in reference to other people. I'm no saint either, as I've said repeatedly on this blog on previous occasions, but you cannot endeavour to promote some aspect of Sikhism if, in the same breath, you are going to act in violation of its humanitarian principles with regards to how you treat people.

For the benefit of people browsing SM who are not familiar with the basics of Sikhism, can I just clarify that the Times article is inaccurate in its use of the term "guru" above. There are indeed Sikhs who have a more religion-focused life and may dedicate themselves to promoting the faith's teachings or practising some aspect of it as detailed above; however, Sikhism does not have any modern-day "gurus". The only gurus the faith acknowledges are the 10 historical individuals from Guru Nanak to Guru Gobind Singh inclusive, along with the scriptures termed the Guru Granth Sahib which Guru Gobind Singh nominated as his eternal successor.

or at VERY leasy, wore soemthing that covers her midriff, and clothing that fits appropriately - not pants that are too tight and too long, and a shirt that look spraypainted on, and the person who did it left the job undone.

i mean, gosh, i admit, i'm not perfect, and (as we all are) i'm still learning, but crikees, it doesn't take a degree in rocket science to learn how to dress properly and do one's hair decently, especially as a wife and mother. wether we like it or not, she's considered a role model by some....and actions like what she does do not show couth. plus, what britney does is based on gimmick. that's the whole idea.

tsk..tsk...where have all the culture and tradition gone. When I go to my place of
worship ( which incidently is a Hindu temple) I am dressed in clean semi formal clothes.
I dress to work that way, and that is how I go to worship my God.... remember Work is
worship?. I do not unshaven or wear Jeans or T-shirt, neither does anyone in my family.

I am not a Hindu fanatic or even a very religious person, but I believe that one should
look at their best, that shows respect and organization to oneself and to the supreme
being. Look at some of the older Christian folks ( I mean all- Catholics, Protestants, et al)
men are dressed in crisp suits and ladies in their nicest dress going to church
(Sunday's best), even Homer Simpson and family - although Homer and Bart do it
unwillingly. Definitely worth emulating. I see folks in the temple wearing shorts, torn
jeans, even pajamas.Not really calling for a dress code here, but people should use
their consciousness to understand the decorum of the sanctum.

hi jai dear, no i agree with you, aboslutley. i admit, i get a little um..fragrant in my verbage soemtimes, and you're quite right in what you're saying. sometimes we need the reminder to keep us in line, and i thank you for that. i just hope that one day she'll learn from her actions, hopefully soon, before she causes more trouble than she already has.
