Jail Time for Salman Khan?Musings

For those of us in America, high profile hunting continues to be part of the regular news cycle. After all, our Vice President did shoot, by accident of course, his hunting partner Harry Whittington in the face and body just last week (guns don’t kill people right, its people that kill people?).

So it was kind of humorous to see the parallels between bad boy vice president, and our own Bollywood bad boy Salman Khan, who this week (thanks Bong Breaker) was found guilty of killing two blackbucks, a protected species of antelope, in the western state of Rajasthan in 1998, and sentenced to one year imprisonment. Charges against Khan were pressed by the local Bishnoi community in Rajasthan where the killing took place… “The court can hang me. I am tired of such lengthy proceedings,” Khan told the court. The poaching case is not the actor’s first brush with the law. He is also facing trial in Mumbai (Bombay) in a 2002 hit-and-run case. One person was killed and three others injured when Khan allegedly drove into a group of homeless people sleeping on a pavement. Khan faces 10 charges, including causing death by negligent driving which carries two years in prison. He has pleaded not guilty on all counts.

It was unclear if Khan was drinking while he was allegedly poaching blackbuck, but he was I believe, driving under the influence when he allegedly hit and killed the homeless people. As an aside Vice President Cheney when asked if they had been drinking while hunting noted in his interview with Fox News correspondent Brit Hume: “No. You don’t hunt with people who drink. That’s not a good idea.”

In that same interview with Fox News, Cheney did later indicate that he had had a beer with lunch earlier in the day. Maybe I am dumb, but doesn’t that constitute drinking? Hell a few months ago, you could get arrested in Washington DC for drinking and driving after having only one drink.

A BBC correspondent says the actor, who has also been fined 5,000 rupees ($111) has a month’s time to appeal.

as bill maher said on leno, who's ever met a man who just had 1 beer? that's something you tell the cops when you get pulled over after a night out.. "i just had 1 beer officer".

Fofatlal, how serious you sound! Thanks for the shout old chap.

What are the odds that Salman Khan doesn't ACTUALLY go to jail? I've got 2-1. Do I hear any better? Per-lace your bets now.

Dick Cheney didn't get any penalty though, right? Sure different country, different laws, and i guess at the end of the day, old, white, republican, lawyers aren't really an endangered species.

It takes more than fun and games to sustain a mutiny!

Ah come on fofatfella, Khan shot an endangered species dead. Cheney accidentally injured a fellow middle-aged white rich republican. They're not endangered. Shame.

The guy removing the bullets that Harry Wilson's body is a Indian doctor named Raj Subhani. I am suprised that someone didn't spot with the desi connection, you guys and gal are quite apt at finding desi connections on just about anything as I duely noted in the Turkish movie-> Daily Show-> Art Malik story (brilliant!!).

If you are not driving drunk and haven't broken any traffic laws, it is possible in India to runover and kill a person with your car and escape with a fine of just INR 300($8), no prison time. The bail amount might be higher and the trail might take ages, but you can be sure that you are not going to be found guilty.

Does it count as murder if the victim asks for it? :) Don't give me false hope that I could actually be spared any more shitty films like "Mujhse Dosti Karoge" or "Kyon Ki"

It is kinda sad that the fellow gets charged for shooting bucks even prior to getting charged for running over people asleep on a side-walk. No, these people weren't homeless, they literally lived on the side-walk. Homeless people are relatively more nomadic.

"maamla ek-dum sadela hain.."

You never know, Salman Khan could end up like the other Bollywood stars that did some time in jail.

It sounds like someone was doing a bit more drinking than was first thought.

Secret Service Agents Say Cheney was Drunk When He Shot Lawyer

Secret Service agents guarding Vice President Dick Cheney when he shot Texas lawyer Harry Whittington on a hunting outing two weeks ago say Cheney was "clearly inebriated" at the time of the shooting. Agents observed several members of the hunting party, including the Vice President, consuming alcohol before and during the hunting expedition, the report notes, and Cheney exhibited "visible signs" of impairment, including slurred speech and erratic actions. According to those who have talked with the agents and others present at the outing, Cheney was drunk when he gunned down his friend and the day-and-a-half delay in allowing Texas law enforcement officials on the ranch where the shooting occurred gave all members of the hunting party time to sober up. We talked with a number of administration officials who are privy to inside information on the Vice President's shooting "accident" and all admit Secret Service agents and others say they saw Cheney consume far more than the "one beer' he claimed he drank at lunch earlier that day. "This was a South Texas hunt," says one White House aide. "Of course there was drinking. There's always drinking. Lots of it."
