What does it really mean to be a ... ?

…. Sikh? Or a Hindu? Or a Muslim? Goodness Gracious Me explains it all very simply …

Because we could all use a laugh, heading into this weekend.

That - is - so -funny. Clearly the Sikh gut needs to have a little talk with Jai about what it means to be a Sikh :-)

That was really funny.

Of the many Goodness Gracious Me videos online, this one takes the cake.

No, I think his parents cleared that issue up for him pretty well, metaphysics is so hard on the brain :)
My mom says it best..."you will go to Gurudwara. Because I told you to, and I'm your mother. Now stop whining and put on a salwar-kameez."

From a UK desi POV 'Goodness Gracious Me's humour was pretty lame and lacked a cutting edge. Some of us were doin stuff like this back in da eighties but mixing it wit a political rhetoric that UK mainstream media didn't want to touch. Shout out to Aajkal posse circa 1989-1993 and my Kaliphz bros who really caught da flava of da times and pioneered some serious shit.

For some reason, I can't help but comment whenever there's even a minor GGM reference. This is definitely in my top 5 favorite GGM sketches, not just for it's overall humour (Non-US spelling used out of respect), but I've felt the same frustration over the years when trying to learn more from my elders about being a Sikh. Yeah... didn't work so well.

"Hey, Uncle X, why do Sikhs do Y?"

"Because that's what we do."

Thanks.

"You've got pug, you've got man, you put pug on man...Sikh!"

Now there's an equation that even Simon Singh can't wrap his head around.

Speaking of heads and wrapping around, doesn't the younger Sikh's pug look slightly odd? I haven't seen one done in that style before: perhaps someone with more knowledge on the subject can enlighten me.

the pug is the kenyan style pug. n this show is funny and when it was made in the early 90's it brought asians to mainstream tv in a big way in the uk, as opposed to being the token asian like apu (simpsons) or sanjay shamilla n geeta (eastenders)
u guys need to watch the going for an english sketch, its hilarious!

OK, this is just unfair. I mean people barely even know Sikhs, than how can they be made fun of. I still get mistaken as being a Muslim by many people. Funny thing is, I gave presentation in my English class that showed difference between Sikhs and Muslims. This girls from my English class, on the same day, came up to me in different class's lab and start talking to me as if i was a Muslim. Personally, I don't get offended because Muslims are human being too. Then, I start looking at her like what the hell she is talking about. I had to repeat myself that I am a Sikh. So i do not get that people do not even know about Sikhs, than what gives them the right to make fun of Sikhs?

That is rubbish. It is like taking serious religions to make them funny, iT IS NOT FUNNY. it is important to people. It is like saying don't be a bully but laugh at her/him. You guys are absoulutely STUPID, Do not bother with people that are religious. I am a Sikh. God help you. That will confuse you. BROWN is awful. NASTY. NASTY. NASTY. do not be proud.
