Meetup Mania! (2 Updates)Meetups!

Meetup Mania Mashup.JPG

I’ve been a bit busy, so I haven’t been able to ask you about SM Meetups, but I promise I’ve wanted to do so for several weeks. Those mutinous, offline melas are very much on my mind these days, as I contemplate the end of summer and where I will spend it. You see, not only do I think it’s high time for the second-ever live mutiny in DC, it seems that excessively homesick-me will be in the golden state for much of early September (w00t Northern California!!!). I think it’s time to overwhelm Greco once again; let’s take that possibility from tentative to definite, shall we? Let’s also hope the wifi works this time, as it usually does. ;)

Amardeep inspired me (yet again) to post once he issued his gentle invitation to Philadelphia-area readers to join him for that city’s first meetup, before a very cool-sounding concert he just blogged about. Even if you don’t take him up on his tempting offer, I want you to know that it won’t be an anomalous event— Philadelphia is a great city and I’d love to hold regular meetups there, as well as NY and SF. What say all of you, and when I type that I mean ALL of you, wherever you are. Depending on how much demand and notice we get, we may be able to coordinate sepia soirees elsewhere, since many of us travel, some of us, far too much. :D

DC: When should We Chocolate City mutineers will have our next carb-laden, veg-friendly fiesta on August 19th? August 26th. Who knows, if we don’t tell Abhi, we might be able to facilitate a “Yo Dad” appearance which ISN’T moderated! Imagine the possibilities for information-gathering!

SF: What about you, oh citizens of Baghdad-by-the-bay? How many of you will be around for Labor day weekend? I was assuming your answers would be a sea of “not me”s, so I was tentatively glancing at September 9. Thoughts?

Finally, as for you New Yorkers, any weekend you want to shriek and giggle until the Manager yells at us (cough LaLanterna cough) is fine with me. ;)

:+:

Update #1: The people have spoken. DC’s meetup will be on August 26th. :)

:+:

Zimbly Fantastic

Update # 2: NYC’s loveliest saves the date and suggests something fantastic to meet up for— SummerStage at Central Park with a whole lotta brown choons. Pack your pick-a-nick baskets for Yogi and Booboo to plunder; New York’s meetup will be on August 13th!

What excellent timing you have-- someone bearded in the bunker who shall remain nameless was just asking if anyone wanted a Chicago meetup... ;)

I can do a Chicago meetup some time in September. However, Vinod and I have a SF meetup in the works for August 6th. Post coming soon!

I had a blast at the last DC meetup and would definitely be up for coming out to another one. I'm playing a wedding in the ATL on the 19th, but I'm down for the 26th.

Hmmm.. mebbe the time has come for me to get off my sorry behind and show my face at one of these soirees. They seem to be fun. Next one in NY/Philly on a weekend, count me in!

What excellent timing (FYI, they sent it eight hours before I posted this):

Dear Anna...
Hope all is well!
Just wanted to reach out and invite you to Leela lounge for a drink. Please let me know which evening suits you best.
Yours Truly,
Leela Lounge

To their credit, they felt awful about the Manhattan-meetup-mix-up last time and they wrote me afterwards apologizing for closing on Memorial Day on such short notice. I told them, "All's well that ends well; we had a FANTASTIC time at La Lanterna, our last minute venue."

Anyway, looks like we have a new-old venue for our next NYC meetup, if any of you are so inclined. :)

Aw, that's so sweet of Leela Lounge. I'm down for an NYC meetup =)

Anna, you are a one-woman meet-up machine.

BTW, speaking of earlier inspirations (and the thread that wouldn't die) how does "Dr. Dhruv" sound?

Let's meet in NYC. This time, we'll get a place *across from* LaLaterna. And really stick it to them. I am sure they'll notice the loss.

Incidentally, I went to LaLaterna a few days back after the meetup with some anti-vegetarians who insisted on getting the carpaccio and the salmonella that came along with it. After the natural sequence of events, these guys called LaLaterna and gave them a good talking to. But I digress....

Alllll righty, then. The venue for the next NYC meetup will be Leela Lounge. :) Now PICK A DATE, already.

It's not your fault really. Most people with half a brain would not eat raw meat in the Village. Or anywhere outside of Nobu.

Pooja darling, I thought the back garden was pure enchantment. I loved it so much, I had planned to take my sister there if we made it to New York. Your suggestion was lovely. :)

Will you go to Central Park early and set up picnic blankets for the rest of us? =)

 38 · Janeofalltrades on July 25, 2006 11:18 PM · Direct link · “Quote”(?)

I'll be there early. I'm a big picnicker and will have a blanket enough for 6-7 people to sit on and lots of snacks. Cold Cervazas can be bought there. Doors open 90 minutes before which means at 1:30pm and I assure you that it will be packed and once it's packed they will not let anyone in. So GET THERE EARLY.

BTW "Please do not bring alcoholic beverages, glass, bottles, coolers, pets, bicycles, rollerblades, folding chairs, beach umbrellas, video cameras or tape recorders. No flash photography is allowed. All bags are subject to search."

And they strictly follow this rule so bring blankets to sit on, water and food but don't bring any wine the way you do for concerts on the Great Lawn.

 41 · Nina P on July 25, 2006 11:47 PM · Direct link · “Quote”(?)

I am once again posting through an anonymizer, to say that, speaking of San Francisco, and waaayyyy far in advance, if anyone wants to meet up Thursday November 9th, I'll be there, because the Balboa Theater is gonna have a screening of the "Sita Sings the Blues" work-in-progress that night. Maybe we could get dinner before or drinks after. Or just popcorn during.

If and when there's a NYC meet at the Leela Lounge, I'll be there; not sure about sitting in Central Park (I'm something of an enochlophobe, and also a mosquito magnet).

 42 · Ennis on July 25, 2006 11:48 PM · Direct link · “Quote”(?)

If you're a mosquito magnet then it's a public service for you to come along ;)
There are no mosquitos in central park, silly, the rats eat their larvae.

43 · New to SF, New to Sepia on July 25, 2006 11:50 PM · Direct link · “Quote”(?)

So I am fairly new to Sepia Mutiny and I am very intrigued by a potential meetup in SF.

What exactly happens during a meet up? I am guessing it is just a meet up..(and thus it is called a meet up) of everyone who loves this website.
Am I right? Or do these meet ups come with an agenda/presentations etc?

I have been dying to meet some browness in the city, but have not had such luck because of my crazy work hours....that and the fact that I have only been in the city for 3 weeks and did not know a soul when I moved here, so I have no idea where to meet like minded, desi people.

I am definately missing hanging out with browness.

Count me in if the invitation is extended to everyone!

 46 · Ennis on July 25, 2006 11:55 PM · Direct link · “Quote”(?)

For desis, it's not a crowd until it goes above 10,000 people or so. Largest crowd I've been in was 750,000 - as large as the population of SF or Boston. However, that did bring out "crowded rat" behavior - guys started pushing each other and starting fights b/c they were in each others space.

If you're bringing picnic blankets et al, pick a corner to stake out for the sepia crowd. That way we'll know where to converge once we walk in. The center's too sunny usually, and if we get too close, we're going to have to stand, what with everybody else around... and I don't know how you loquacious enochlophobes will deal with that.

Sorry about the multiple posts, but taking a leaf from the New Yorker's book, the event on August 13 at Millennium Park looks interesting.

Music Without Borders: Anoushka Shankar "Rise" Featuring Special Guest DJ Set By Karsh Kale Date: 8/13/2006 Time: 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM Park location: Jay Pritzker Pavilion

Ennis, a humble request from SF: how about a non-Greco location for August? Don't make me come to North Beach twice in 4 weeks! ;)

I am totally fine with that. Greco is MINE, bitches--It's not a m e e t u p unless there's assloads of Illy, sugar (either from cake or gelato), sympathetic wait staff who leave us the eff alone and tables in the window. ;) So please, thrill brimful and choose elsewhere. Maybe on the peninsula? We've never done a meetup outside of North Beach, so the possibilities are endless.

It's not Ravi Shankar man it's Talvin (vat does he do for a liwing) Singh there will be no uncles and aunties except those who think they got game. Email me closer to the date if you want to coordinate getting there early and scoring space. We need a Mutiny Jhanda to draw attention!

Don't be too sure, JoaT. I know a good number of (cool) aunties and uncles who know what he does and dig his stuff. (I am thinking of asking my parents to come along.)

Yes!

Yikes taking it back! My parents won't go near anyplace where the potential of running into 18 year olds desis who wear pants that show their buttcracks or underwear exists.

It's slightly confusing with two meetup-related threads running simultaneously, so let's recap:

Philly: TONIGHT! (Amardeep)

SF: August 6th (Ennis and Vinod)

NYC: August 13th (me)

DC: August 26th (me)

SF: a soft September 9th (me)

I write "soft" because we haven't officially chosen that date. I don't mind meeting the weekend before and I'm not booking my ticket until we finalize, but it seems like it will be the 9th...

Gaurav, I much prefer it when I do the girl-ass-grabbing.

A N N A, I'm sure all the boys here prefer it too. Lipstick Les...., er, Lipstick Libyans are always appreciated by the average red-blooded randy desi.

Not by me, of course. I think that young South Asian people have far too much freedom these days and that any homoerotic activities should be confined to dodgy-looking lanky moustachioed men back in the motherland who fondle each other in public far too much yet insist that they are "like brothers". Everyone else should be as chaste as possible before marriage and ideally after marriage too. Any canoodling is purely for procreation and should be undertaken with the lights out, under the sheets, and the distasteful monkey-business should be completed as quickly as possible so that everyone can get back to normal and insist that Indian babies are delivered by storks.

Now if you don't mind, I'm going to get back to admiring the flower of British womanhood in all those tightum-tight clothes that the foxy ladies are wearing due to our current heatwave in London, along with daydreaming about tanned lovelies in bikinis and strappy high-heels and whatnot.

will there be another nyc meetup soon? 'Cos i'm not sure if y'all always plan meetups this way, and if there is a mailing list or something, i'd like to be on it.

On another note, any news on the Austin meetup? --that's where i'm gonna be visiting while i miss the nyc one.

This IS how they always plan meetups. No mailing list. PLEASE do not suggest one. I haven't slept in four days, don't give them any ideas.

If some of you guys are heading there afterwards, I'd love to introduce myself and meet you mutineers.

Can we just work around MY schedule? haha.

Yes Office Deepa, Esq. is making her home and office on the Peninsula (for now), but SF is waaaay more fun - so let's kick it up there.

Didn't someone mention Chaat Cafe? (which the fabulous brimful introduced me to, btw.)

Janeofalltrades,

That's really nice of you, I'm sure meeting you would be fun too. Although I'm scared of what happens at these things once the gates slam shut behind you and you're suddenly surrounded by all these strangers in masks discreetly taking off their saris. And that's just the men.

Hahaha the last one I went to was super. It was a lot of fun and I got to meet all the people I've admired here. I also ran into people I knew, you know the 2 degree of separation rule with desis. It was really just a very pleasant experience. After having encountered so many Indian message boards out there with a bunch of nimrods who drain your brain it was personally very exciting for me to meet other desis who are the complete opposites.

is the DC SM bloggers meetup only for SM contributers? I'd be more than willing to come along if you'll let a fellow desi blogger (albeit blogger-lite) join the convoy : )

Jay (nice name by the way),

I'd be more than willing to come along if you'll let a fellow desi blogger (albeit blogger-lite) join the convoy : )

As far as I know they let anybody turn up to these things, as long as you sign a confidentiality agreement and complete the form in triplicate confirming that you won't sue anyone for any injuries you may sustain during the meetup.....
