More meetups - meshuge!Meetups!

Since all the cool people are doing it, I thought I would announce one meetup, and the promise of more. Vinod and I will be holding a San Fransisco meetup on:

Sunday August 6th, 3 PM at Chaat Cafe in SOMA, SF.

We considered holding it at Greco, but figured it was bad enough to hold a SF meetup without Anna that we didn’t want to add insult to injury. That, and we wanted to make Brimful happy .

I will also try to take my anonymous kundi to the NYC meetup on August 13th, for those of you who miss me on the right coast. This meetup will have both Anna and live music, so there’s no reason for anybody not to be there.

Lastly - I’m thinking about a Chicago meetup in the middle of September or so - are there enough Midwestern Mutineers that we can hold down a table at one of the Devon Ave dives? This would be the first meetup I’d be hosting solo, so be gentle y’all

Considering the great ardor some Chicagoans exhibited on previous threads about meetups, I'm sure they'll be grateful and gentle. Finally, the Mutiny takes the middle path etc.

Sorry, Sunday - fixed it.

I can't help you there. 3 meetups in 3 cities in 5 weeks is my limit!

That's ALL Abhi.

.................................................................

WHO HOSTS/ATTENDS WHERE

Abhi: LA (also: DC-- hometown/where parents live, a fact hereinafter indicated by an asterisk by city name; soon to close down LA bureau and open Houston bureau)

Amardeep: Philly (possible: DC* and NYC...I think)

A N N A : DC, NYC, SF* (possible: Philly)

Ennis: Chicago (possible: SF, NYC*)

Neha: Toronto

Sajit: DC

Siddhartha: NYC (possible: DC*)

Vinod: SF, NYC (possible: Houston*)

When's the NYC meetup?

 15 · A N N A on July 26, 2006 02:47 PM · Direct link · “Quote”(?)

FD, it's confusing with two meetup-related threads running simultaneously, but with Pooja's help, we decided that we'd get together on August 13th, so we could groove to Talvin Singh while we get our meet on. :) More here.

To recap for anyone else:

Philly: TONIGHT! (Amardeep)

SF: August 6th (Ennis and Vinod)

NYC: August 13th (me)

DC: August 26th (me)

SF: a soft September 9th (me)

cool... i'm glad to see there's a possibility for a future toronto meet-up... it would be nice to put faces to all the names here!

I second Ani's request for an LA meetup- the last one was fun, and there are a ridiculous amount of Los Angeles blogger connections here. But it would really suck to see all these meetups going on all across the nation within a few weeks of each other, and nothing happening here in L.A. (sad puppy dog eyes trying to convice Abhi to get his head out of his lab to coordinate a meetup in LA).

Cities which have already held meetups: DC, LA, NYC, Toronto, SF. :) It is indeed possible.

All of these events are going down because different Mutineers were already going to those cities (NY, SF) around those dates, etc. If someone was going to L.A., I'm sure they'd help put together a meeutp, which leads me to...

(sad puppy dog eyes trying to convice Abhi to get his head out of his lab to coordinate a meetup in LA)

Awww, Abhi has very good reason to be busy. Word around the bunker is, he's only going to get busier very soon. :) Be nice, don't guilt him. Meetups do take a bit of work and there's only so much each of us can do. Besides, he's saving himself for Houston. ;)

when the heck will there be a fried green tomatoes, greens, and grits meetup in atlanta? i have less than a year to go here before i move my hummus bum back to california...so this is an official invite to you Mutineers... come one come all...the bean is waiting patiently..

p.s. and to those who live in one of the cities where the meetups are being held, you SHOULD go.. heck i went to the one in DC in March and had a blast.. you will meet random readers of SM to frequent posters to the Mutineers themselves.. it is really a fun time... truly memorable.. so get your calendars out and put it on the things to do list... ;), and 40 lashes with a wet noodle Ennis for not having the meetup in chicago the weekend i was there!!!

screw that. He's lagging in the polls for Coolest Mutineer. If the ever-reclusive (and faceless) Ennis can get out and mingle, then Abhi can hold a Mir Meetup or something.

/joking.

A little kvetch...

I'm a (generally) nice Jewish girl from Brooklyn and a regular-ish reader of SM. As an outsider here, I don't have much to add to the discourse, but plenty to learn from it.

But I do have one teeny-tiny pearl of wisdom to impart, which is why I'm making the leap from lurker to poster: the correct, standardized Yiddish transliteration is meshugener, which means "crazy person." If you're just wanting to say "crazy," the word you want is meshuge.

I may not know the difference between paagal and deewana, but I'm not bad with the mame-loshn.

Rosie,

Thanks for the fantastic comment. I love me some yiddish. :)

I'm a (generally) nice Jewish girl from Brooklyn and a regular-ish reader of SM. As an outsider here, I don't have much to add to the discourse, but plenty to learn from it.

Sometimes outsiders have an even better perspective. :) Feel free to add. Or subtract. Or go forth and multiply. ;)

I would like you to know that I think it's a shanda that the title was incorrect-- rest assured the Intern has a new piercing from the ear-pinching I administered for such sloppy research. Ennis is the other yiddish-phile on staff and he asked the SM Idiot to check the spelling and then...feh. What to do? Anyone want an internship?

I may not know the difference between paagal and deewana, but I'm not bad with the mame-loshn.

Wah wah. That's way more than I know but then again, that ain't my mame-loshn. Will we see you at the meetup? :)

Yes, a shande indeed, especially with all these goyim nice people watching, but please don't injure the Intern on my account. Really, he seems like such a good boy. Or such a good girl. I don't know which.

Will we see you at the meetup?

Depending on the time and venue, I'll certainly try to put in an appearance.

Cheers,
Rosie

The circumcisions will continue until the Yiddish improves! (looking threateningly at the intern) Don't make me ask Siddhartha to play Mohel - he's desi, jewish, and speaks fluent French! This is not a man you want to have handling a scalpel!

Yay, people of all ages are welcome, depending on the venue. (Chaat Cafe in SF is obviously cool, but some meetups are scheduled for places where they card/serve alcohol.)

what i'm getting at, is that i'd love to attend a meetup, but would feel sheepish about my inability to contribute. you all seem very nice, but also seem to know everything and everyone else, and i am more than a little intimidated! :)

Siddhartha,

Well, Summerstage has its moments, but I understand the aversion--not sure if I dare to brave it for Lady Sovereign this Sunday. And there's nothing wrong with the Knitting Factory--as long as it's not a performance-art piece involving circumcision (it has been said around here that you are to be feared with a scalpel).

If you're planning to drink in the Knitting Factory vicinity before the show, I recommend Puffy's Tavern, at the corner of Hudson and Harrison. It's been cleaned up, so it's not as dazzlingly dive-y as it was a decade ago, but, then, what is? It's usually pretty quiet on Sunday afternoons and evenings, with a great bartender (Christy, formerly of the late, great Liquor Store bar), and a cantankerous crew of regulars. There's a dartboard. And I once heard Edward Albee eulogize a dog there.
