Welcome Grandmaster P!Events

We at Sepia Mutiny would like to extend a very snarky hearty welcome to the newest Sepia Macaca: Puran Singh. That’s right - Deep is a daddy! [Mothers everywhere want to know what the rest of us are waiting for]

Puran Singh (“Master P,” as my brother is already calling him) was born yesterday at 8pm. He’s 8 pounds, 2 ounces (3.7 Kg), and both he and his mother are doing well. We have lots of family around helping us out and giving support (thanks, everyone), and the hospital experience has been pretty good, though the final stage of labor was difficult (I guess it always is).

The name means “fulfillment,” “completion,” or “perfection.” No one in our family has been named “Puran,” but there are a couple of famous people who have had this name: including Bhagat Puran Singh and also a famous Punjabi poet. In the Sikh tradition, the first letter of a baby’s name is usually chosen by opening the Guru Granth Sahib at random, and taking a “Vakh.” The first letter of the page opened is supposed to be the first letter of the baby’s name. In our case, we got “P,” and I immediately thought of “Puran…” [Link]

P is for Perfection

Puran: The cap is cute, but when do I get a black pagh like my dad’s?

For those of you similarly entranced, you can find more Puran-o-graphy on flickr .

Congratulations Amardeep. Another reason Puran is a great name is because in folk-lore there was Puran Bhagat, renowned for his devotion to his parents and the strength of his character. There are some really famous Punjabi songs about him.

Yet another reason why Puran is a great name
Puran is a popular Maharashtrian sweet used as prashad.
Also used in sweet paratha (puran poli).

Congratulations. You will not sleep well for a long time. All the help you're getting now? Slowly, they all go away. And then there's you and your screaming child and the night. A night out is an impossibility; reading in soltitude becomes very difficult. But there is also so much love and joy; yes it's corny but true. And everyone tells me they are only babies once, so I try to enjoy the moment.

Anyway, I like Punny. Or Punnu. Although I feel like they're not adequately embarrassing... what's his shape? You can name him golu or dabbu or ladoo or something like that...

Sunny, this nickname was everywhere. The reason my mom gave me this name was cuz a hindi movie "Betaab" with Sunny Deol came in 1983 (my year of birth) and she loved him in that movie, hence I became sunny.

To list a few others heard around the neighborhood were chunnu, munnu, ladoo, golu, piddu, tilu, nattu, manu, nanu, gonu, monu...for Puran it can be something like Puri (a la chhole puri)

Jeet, when you hold your child for the first time, you understand intuitively why your father still smiles and gives you a hug even when you ignore him for long spells. You forgive your mother for all the times she has obsessed over you. Its one of life's great moments.

I was just informed by a friend who knows much more about these things than I do that the name Puran (Amardeep's son's name) and Pooran (the name of the character (and subject of the song) from folk-lore I've been referencing throughout this thread) are TWO DIFFERENT NAMES. That's embarassing! Anyway ignore everything I said in this post - except hearty congratulations to Amardeep and his wife.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. It's astonishing to see 95 comments here! We're now home from the hospital and starting to decompress -- also learning to change diapers and burp a newborn.

Some people wondered whether I'll be saying goodbye to blogging. I don't think so -- but for the next six weeks the writing probably will be greatly reduced. Master P needs to be fed and diaper-checked every three hours, and that's not exactly a trivial proposition. It's not that he's that demanding, but so far I'm finding it a bit difficult to write anything.

You might see more infancy and childhood related posts from me, but if you were looking carefully you already saw them. Designer Desi Baby food, anyone?

As for nicknames, not yet. I suppose a nickname might emerge on its own.

Amardeep, when you get some breathing time from diaper duty, you must write a post about punjabi nick names. I always felt shortchanged when my best friend (who is sikh) described her family to me. It was priceless to hear her call a 250 lbs badass Sardar uncle 'Pinkee'!
