Welcome Grandmaster P!Events
We at Sepia Mutiny would like to extend a very snarky hearty welcome to the newest Sepia Macaca: Puran Singh. That’s right - Deep is a daddy! [Mothers everywhere want to know what the rest of us are waiting for]
Puran Singh (“Master P,” as my brother is already calling him) was born yesterday at 8pm. He’s 8 pounds, 2 ounces (3.7 Kg), and both he and his mother are doing well. We have lots of family around helping us out and giving support (thanks, everyone), and the hospital experience has been pretty good, though the final stage of labor was difficult (I guess it always is).
The name means “fulfillment,” “completion,” or “perfection.” No one in our family has been named “Puran,” but there are a couple of famous people who have had this name: including Bhagat Puran Singh and also a famous Punjabi poet. In the Sikh tradition, the first letter of a baby’s name is usually chosen by opening the Guru Granth Sahib at random, and taking a “Vakh.” The first letter of the page opened is supposed to be the first letter of the baby’s name. In our case, we got “P,” and I immediately thought of “Puran…” [Link]

congratulations!
Congrats Amardeep! Make sure to get him started blogging early. We need new blood to carry on the struggle.
Hearty congratulations, Prof. The little one has a skeptical look. I like that.
congratulations
Congratulations !!! on this great news for your family. Best wishes !!!
whohoooooo! we need to get him to start wearing a macaca shirt early on! congrats to you!
caption contest:
oh yeah... senator allen..another macaca for you NOT to welcome to america :)
Congratulations! That's wonderful news, and a most beautiful baby. Welcome to the world!
"Why am I here when the milk is obviously over there?"
Congrats!
Well, the boy's Punju...so he's probably thinking of how to totally rebel against the meaning of his name as soon as possible :-D
Congratulations! Totally dig the knitted cosmonaut-style headgear, too.
Awwwww, congratulations! He's adorable :)
Saheli, that's priceless. These young 'uns are always thinking, aren't they.
He's so cute.
Congratulations on your beautiful baby! Best wishes to you and your family.

"When I want your opinion, I'll give it to you."
Caption: "Brave new world my ass. Huxley smells no better than my diaper. Which reminds me... Daaaad!!!"
Congratulations to Mrs and Mr Amardeep! Well done!!! and a hearty welcome to the little buddy. Will look forward to some late night blogging old boy :-)
BTW Amardeep... disposable or cloth? natural or epidural? outback or envoy? sling or pram2010 gold series ...
:-)) just a few of the little things that have had my buddies sit back and ponder.
Congratulations, amardeep!
:-)
awww that was a great reading break!
Congrats Amardeep! Lots of new things await you... enjoy!
congratulations Amardeep & Mrs. Amardeep!
Congratulations Amardeep. Another reason Puran is a great name is because in folk-lore there was Puran Bhagat, renowned for his devotion to his parents and the strength of his character. There are some really famous Punjabi songs about him.
AWWWW! Congrats! He's adorable
Congratulations! AHH! What a cute little baby!
Congrats bro! Mutiny: The Next Generation
Congrats Amardeep and family! Vadhia ji Vadia! !!
What great news! Congrats!
Congrats.
Yet another reason why Puran is a great name
Puran is a popular Maharashtrian sweet used as prashad.
Also used in sweet paratha (puran poli).
Welcome to our world Puran !
I know I'm repeating but, what a beautiful child! We wish Puran all the best.
Thanks for sharing your joy, Amardeep.
Congratulations!!!
He's absolutely gorgeous!
bouncin' brown baby!
Congratulations!
p.s.full time jobs (i assume), full time blogging, now, full time parenting, how do you bloggers find time?
Congratulations to you and your family, Amardeep!
Congratulations. You will not sleep well for a long time. All the help you're getting now? Slowly, they all go away. And then there's you and your screaming child and the night. A night out is an impossibility; reading in soltitude becomes very difficult. But there is also so much love and joy; yes it's corny but true. And everyone tells me they are only babies once, so I try to enjoy the moment.
Congratulations!
Grandmaster P is gonna be one li'l heartbreaker when he grows up! That close-up pic already captured mine a bit...
:) :) :)
Congratulations!
HEEEEEEEEEEYYYYYYYY, CONGRATULATIONS to Deep and his family! :)
A hearty congratulations! Is this the first baby born from a blogger? The mutiny continues to push space and time...
To any blogger? Hardly. But this is the first time any of the Masthead Mutineers have had a kid born while blogging.
But this is the first time any of the Masthead Mutineers have had a kid born while blogging
...that they know of (for males).
Dear Sir,
you give us either far too much or far too little credit here.
Let's not give Amardeep too much credit. As far as I know he was NOT blogging during the actual birth. There is still something to strive for :)
Nor was he the one giving birth :)
Welcome, Puran - and congratulations to Amardeep and family!
I think you were looking in the mirror when you said that, dickwad.
Then it would be honest enough.
**
Well said, Ennis.
Neither can we be certain that he was blogging while, um, making the naan...
(Deep, are you squirming yet?)
Ok, show of hands. Who here has ever uttered the words (while having your ear nibbled): Just a second dear, let me just finish up this post...
You too sir, either give us too much or too little credit ;)
Congratulations!
Congratulations! Puran is a great name. All the best to your family.
Congratulations... Class of 2028 !
Congratulations, Professor-saab! Vadhaiyan ji Vadhaiyan!
Puran-o-graphy lol.
Congratulations Amardeep! Be sure to archive this page some place safe for Puran to read one day. Not every baby receives such a warm web welcome into the world!
Congratulations!! Puran is very precious and absolutely adorable =).
Congrats!, the baby looks very healthy. I was about to say 'P' for Pretty Singh but then that will have to wait until they have a girl.
Congrats Amardeep - that is one spiffy looking dude.
Caption: "You can keep that black one dad, I need to get one from Burberry."
Awwww my hearty congratulations Amardeep. How sweet.
Aw, congrats. You've just managed to stir up my maternal desires once again. When's it gonna be my turn?
Fantastic! Wonderful news - congratulations to you and your family! :)
Congratulations Amardeep.
congratulations amardeep on the little professor (?)-in-the-making!
From a beautiful song about Puran Bhagat:
Putt hunde ne pipal dian chaavan, buddhe hoye ma peyan layi
Purna, ve akkhiyan'ch rabb vasda, koi dur na...
Meaning:
Sons are like the shade of the peepul tree, for their aged parents
Oh Puran, God lives in your eyes, no further than that...
Congratulations and best wishes.
Congratulations Amardeep and convey the same to the mother. Puran is an awesome name.
What about a nick/pet name? All punjabis need one. How about Punny Singh? :)
congratulations!
congrats to the little wonder, and to the parents.
welcome to the world P, you just made it a slightly better place to be.
Congratulations! The little one looks almost as though he's thinking, "Who are you, and where's the one with the milk?". Good luck with the sleep deprivation.
Congrats!!!
Dude, the embarrassing nickname is not just for Punjabis. One of my worst nightmares is that everyone I know finds out about the childhood nickname that I've worked so hard to shed. Anyway, I like Punny. Or Punnu. Although I feel like they're not adequately embarrassing... what's his shape? You can name him golu or dabbu or ladoo or something like that...
Congrats, Amardeep (and fam!)
I love his "whatchu talkin' bout, Willis??" expression in the first pic.
Naw, man. We Punjus get the REALLY embarassing names, like Tinku or Shiny or Happy or Pimple.
Let's leave the kid be for a while yet!
Congratulations to Amardeep & Mrs Amardeep on the birth of your child.
|| poota mata ki asees ||
|| nimakh naa bisrao tumko har har ||
|| sada bhajoh jagdees ||
I think he looks skeptical. Destined to be a professor.
Congratulations to Amardeep and the family. Cute little "Sher a Punjab". He already looks like a rebel philosopher!
I see the future President of the USA here!
Congratulations Amardeep to you and your wife. And another macacca is born to haunt the dreams of republican senators.
This kid looks like hes going to grow up to be a bad@ss...
cute little kid.. Congrats Amardeep and family..
congrats deep and family!!
He's beautiful!! Congratulations to you and your wifey =)
What was it?
I think we should have a thread where we all confess our childhood nicknames, that might provide some inspiration for Amardeep.
Paratha Singh?
Congratulations! What a sweetie ! :)
CONGRATULATIONS prof, Where is the party? He is sooo cutee, dont let my gf see this or she might just steal him from you. Puran is such a beautiful name, glad you didnt name him something that ends with "jeet" or "deep"... you know how we do. I 've heard that when a man holds his baby for the first time, thats when he actually FEELS like a man and you certainly have the smirk on your face (in the pic where you are holding him). congratulations again
Congratulations Amardeep.
1) Sleep when the baby does, if at all possible, because he's not following your schedule any time soon, trust me. :-)
2) Show the lady some love, and be very patient, cos its been much more of an experience for her than for you.
Congratulations! Very cute. And nice name.
Sunny, this nickname was everywhere. The reason my mom gave me this name was cuz a hindi movie "Betaab" with Sunny Deol came in 1983 (my year of birth) and she loved him in that movie, hence I became sunny.
To list a few others heard around the neighborhood were chunnu, munnu, ladoo, golu, piddu, tilu, nattu, manu, nanu, gonu, monu...for Puran it can be something like Puri (a la chhole puri)
I 've heard that when a man holds his baby for the first time, thats when he actually FEELS like a man and you certainly have the smirk on your face (in the pic where you are holding him). congratulations again
Jeet, when you hold your child for the first time, you understand intuitively why your father still smiles and gives you a hug even when you ignore him for long spells. You forgive your mother for all the times she has obsessed over you. Its one of life's great moments.
Congratulations!!!
Congratulations yaar. Where the party at ?
Congrats on the Lil'st Supastar, Professor. Best wishes to your wife and family.
CONGRATS!! such a cute baby!!
Congrats! Enjoy every moment
Congratulations - the little macaca is devilicious :)
You'd have to marry me before I told you. I don't think you could get nicknames out of anyone else here either, unless they're harmless, like Jeet's.
LOL! Awwww, cho chweet little Puran! :D Congrats to the family again!
Oh he's gorgeous. Congratulations.
Will you marry me?
OK, here is the great Kuldeep Manak (one of the best Punjabi folk-singers in recent decades) singing the classic song Puran Bhagat. The line I referenced in post #58 comes in at 1:31 in the video.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=1N7kuQFnt94
What a stunner. Congratulations!
I was just informed by a friend who knows much more about these things than I do that the name Puran (Amardeep's son's name) and Pooran (the name of the character (and subject of the song) from folk-lore I've been referencing throughout this thread) are TWO DIFFERENT NAMES. That's embarassing! Anyway ignore everything I said in this post - except hearty congratulations to Amardeep and his wife.
Only if I can nickname you Paratha.
Thanks everyone for your kind words. It's astonishing to see 95 comments here! We're now home from the hospital and starting to decompress -- also learning to change diapers and burp a newborn.
Some people wondered whether I'll be saying goodbye to blogging. I don't think so -- but for the next six weeks the writing probably will be greatly reduced. Master P needs to be fed and diaper-checked every three hours, and that's not exactly a trivial proposition. It's not that he's that demanding, but so far I'm finding it a bit difficult to write anything.
You might see more infancy and childhood related posts from me, but if you were looking carefully you already saw them. Designer Desi Baby food, anyone?
As for nicknames, not yet. I suppose a nickname might emerge on its own.
Congratulations!!
Amardeep, when you get some breathing time from diaper duty, you must write a post about punjabi nick names. I always felt shortchanged when my best friend (who is sikh) described her family to me. It was priceless to hear her call a 250 lbs badass Sardar uncle 'Pinkee'!
