Back to the strange case of Officer Suckbir: I find it rather unfortunate that the Sikh community has to learn about the existence of a gay sardar through this particular ignoble instance. I'm afraid that his crimes (prostitution, soliciting fake prescription drugs, owning crotchless leather chaps) will be equated with his sexual orientation and mainstream acceptance of homosexuality among desis will remain out of reach. I'm not aware of any openly gay Sikhs, but I hope they come to prominence at their own discretion and in a nobler fashion.

This is a really important point. I have a friend who recently came out to his very conservative Maharashtrian parents and he always mentioned the only other gay person they have known to be a "flamboyant flaming fag" (his words) that always made it uncomfortable for him to be honest about who he was. The FFF was terribly traumatizing to his parents and that was the first thing his parents had issue with, that he would be like the FFF!

It's tough for desis to be out whether they are Sikh or Hindu or Muslim. All of the gay Indians I know, none of them are really out. If they are older their sisters or brothers might know, but they circumscribe themselves to some extent out of deference to family pride. I have a gay cousin, and I've seen it - he is in his thirties.

Fuerza Dulce, that was beautiful...the bagpipes and dhol do work well together somehow. Also, VIP records is based in Scotland, and some of the best bhangra releases of the past 1 or 2 years have come from them. If you look at some of the photos they include with the albums, they are clearly proud to be desi AND Scottish...kilts, bagpipes, bhangra, dhols, and all. Fusion at its best.

Amitabh - I couldn't get enough of that clip when I first heard it. I was in the marching band in h.s. Yeah UberMetroMallu, the Justin Fashanu story is really desperately sad. I doubt that a gay footballer will be able to come out in England for at least a generation or two.
