Live music in L.A. this weekendMusic

For those of you mutineers who live near L.A. and are fiending for something fun to do this weekend I got two suggestions for you:

The Throws (picture by Preston Merchant)

1) Aditya Rao and his band The Throws will be playing at Hotel Cafe in Hollywood at 10:30p.m. Saturday night (only $7). I’m going to try and make it out.

If summer’s end could be perfectly punctuated, it would be an exclamation in the form of a song by L.A. band The Throws. Comprised of lead singer Aditya Rao, bassist Johnny Vergara and drummer Joey Ponchetti, this melodic neo-British, indie-pop outfit is a triple threat, cultivating a decidedly superior sound in a town where rock bands are as quotidian as a gorgeous day in Los Angeles.

Formerly known as Lovely, the band was obliged to change its name in July 2006 after learning of a Portland glam rock band also registered with the name, and The Throws it became. But it was clear this talented group had gained a sparkling opportunity to reinvent itself and woo new audiences. [Link]

Can’t make it? Are you one of those “popular” people who already know what you are doing on Saturday night? Well how about Sunday night then?

2) Shaheen Sheik [see previous posts 1, 2, 3, 4] is about to launch her second album and is previewing some of the songs on it at The Gig on Sunday night at 9p.m. She adds:

it seems that mtv desi is excited about my set of new songs. they’re coming to shoot the night.

I think I should go. In addition to getting the chance to listen to Shaheen play again, there is a chance I might be on some of the MTV desi footage and then…there is a chance that SHE might finally notice me.

Abhi, that's my picture of Throws. I know they didn't credit me, but could you? Thanks.

For those of you fiending for something to do in DC tonight, come see a certain gangly brown jazz drummer play at Staccato (18th and U)from 10:30-midnight. (Sorry SM intern, I just think we should plug all brown musicians equally, don't you?)

I found Nirali very easy to read and navigate. Now if the women of South Asian media can band together, us gal pals will be happy. It's getting disappointing to read the same story when you pick up an Nirvana, Nirali, and IStyle. I mean who is this Navi Rawat that is so important to these mags?

The Throws rocked last night! Thanks Abhi for the info. I had no idea Shyamalaman could sing... :-)

I think I spotted the SM gang on the table by the stage.. was too lazy/drunk to make an effort and introduce myself.

WhaT?!?!? You saw us and didn't say "hello"!?!?!? First of all, here in LA, we don't really roll out in "SM Gang" style, though it does sound hella gangsta. Second of all, brown people always say "hi" to other brown people, no need to be shy. Third, I saw you hovering - and if you didn't leave so early I was about to introduce the 'gang' to you!

The Throws were awesome, and Aditya kix ass. I felt a lil bit like a groupie singing along to the songs, but they did a set with 5 band members and had a really full sound. I personally liked the song he did dedicated to his dad. Mad Guru took some great watercolors of the band, which I'm sure he'll post up on his blog. They've been recording and their CD will drop early next year.

Taz.. interesting.. who did you think I was? Didn't mean to "hover" :-)... my bad.. I shoulda said ello.
I was with a friend and she pointed out the resemblance to Night. Now brown people don't all look alike, but this one is for real.

Oh please. As you mentioned, you were "lazy/drunk" i.e. not quite on the subtle side. ;-) I'm really friendly to approach, promise! I have developed a sixth sense for spotting mutineers in the crowd and meeting random mutineers in the most oddest of places. (Shout out to the lurker that hollered at me on the dance floor in the Bay!) Trust.

We gals were thinking actually - a cross of M. Night AND Rob Thomas (post pop makeover look).

Yes, I must second Taz. There defintely is no mafia-like gang. I prefer to think of us more as double-0 agents working alone and occasionally collaborating on missions of great consequence. Plus, as long time readers know, being a blogger ruins your dating prospects. It's hard enough for me to meet a girl without additionally surrounding myself with a fearsome blogging gang. God forbid, what if I fell for a girl from another blogging gang? Would it be like West-side story? Would it end tragically in a knife fight?

Jazz, you've got my mind spinning now. Perhaps I shouldn't be seen in public with any bloggers for a while. Next time you can say hi :)

You know that maxim 'Words maketh a man'? Well, maybe there's no such thing.. but in Abhi's case its true anyways. It took me about a pico-second to realize that the white shirted dude had to be Abhi.. your look kinda matches your posts. Incidentally, Taz, I just read your previous statement about me leaving early. I was there till 2 (post-Throws your table metamorphosed to white). So you’re definitely mistaking me with someone else.

SM massiv!

I still think you are who I think you are. But yes, we left early to go to Beauty Bar.

Wait, I was wearing a blue shirt that night! Also I came straight from a business attire-type banquet at school (I don't normally dress like that at a live music venue). The plot thickens.

It looked white in the lights, Abhi. I thought that comment was funny- that he thought that your "post banquet" gear matched your blog post. :-) Did I match my posts???

Oh by look, I didn't mean the attire, I was referring to the face.

Taz, in your case, I've seen your pic somewhere.. so I didn’t have to guess.

You are totally ruining my game here.
