Paging Bollywood FuglyPhotos
Before the blogosphere goes collectively gaga over Shilpa Shetty’s style and grace, I just want to show you one picture [Thanks Saheli!]
To get the full impact of the outfit, you really do have to click on it and go to the larger version.
I have no idea where to begin … never mind, when you’re a Bollywood star, you make your own rules.
And if you’re going to make a statement of personal style, why not shoot the moon?
p.s. what is it with Shetty and animal prints? Or is that too catty a question to ask?

Don't be so harsh Ennis. I have underwear that looks like that.
You have underwear with a photo of Shetty in that outfit, printed on it? Wow - you're a far bigger bollywood fan than I ever believed.
I'm sorry I don't see what's wrong with the outfit. It's fabulous and she looks great. It's a blue shawl over an animal print outfit. I'm sorry Ennis am I missing something?
Clearly I'm not a fashionista. It's that animal print with that jewelry and stone work and that handbag and that shawl.
Sin - help me out here!
Animal prints aside, what's with earrings so long they touch your collarbone?
That said, I thought she did look pretty going in to the house on Big Brother, though, from all the repeats of it they've been showing on NDTV tonight, she's lucky she hasn't given herself whiplash with the number of hairflips she does.
Btw, following on Abhi's Gujurati-or-not-Gujurati post, any Mutineers going to be posting about the conspicuous absence of the movie Parzania in Gujurat this weekend?
Everything that needs to be said about that film (and I use the word film loosely) on SM has been said here already :)
you know, the "sari" is fugly enough, but what is with the purse? at least something that matches would be more tasteful...
If you look at the clip, she reason she kept touching her hair was to get it off her face. It was very windy out there.
Clearly :-) FYI that blue with animal print or pink with animal print is extremely popular and quite common. More here.
Why Sin?
I passed on it at the IAAC festival last autumn, thinking it just sounded too hokey and gimmicky, plus Naseer had already played a batty Parsi about 6 months earlier in Being Cyrus, and after reading the post you pointed to back then, I felt I'd made a good decision.
But with all the clips I saw on TV last Friday, I was starting to wish I had gone. Plus, the back story is was so sad (the actual family whose son was never found hoped that it would screen in Gujurat and someone would come forward with info about their son, as unlikely as that is...)
Ok, no more topic hijacking... back to the fugly matter at hand...
She wins something for spurious reasons and so you attack her fashion sense? Wow, talk about having a go at women in the public eye over their appearance. This is as creepy as what Goody is reported to have said.
Thanks for the connection JOAT--now we all know where Abhi gets his undies. :)
Ennis, I agree that texture and pattern usually aren't the best bedfellows. This particular concoction is worsened by the yellow/orange sparklies(?) around the collar.
People really should be a little more careful about throwing themselves full-on into fashion fads. That's exactly how everyone ended up in hypercolor and jams.
Actually, a very different connection. I mentioned to somebody that Shetty had won, they happened to share this picture with me, and I was so amused that I posted it. There's really nothing sinister about it. I'm quite indifferent to her one way or the other, having neither seen her movies nor seen her CBB appearances. If CBB helps her career, good for her, that's what actors do - they appear places, attract the public's interest, and get paid for it.
The only connection here is that because we were talking about her, I thought that people might be interested in this photo. 6 months ago, I doubt many of our readers would have cared about Shetty at all.
Take it away T-hype, it's all yours :-)
Because The Gays know all about fashion, of course.
[;) ;) ;) for the irony impaired]
Jeez Ennis sorry I can't help but roll my eyes. There is nothing fugly or for that matter uncommon about the outfit and it seemed like such a catty attack on her now that she's won and I realize that wasn't your point.
Dude, what's up with chewing out Ennis? He mentioned the Shetty affair. I googled her. I wasn't even sure I remembered what she looked like, so I google imaged her. This one caught my eye. I thought it was bollywood fugly material. Just b/c something is common and on Victoria Secret doesn't make it beautiful. No offense JOAT, but that's my take--the animal print totally ruins what might have been a pretty, textured, flowing outfit. If the blue was less turquoise or the animal print a different animal, maybe. I don't actually care about fashion---my gut reaction to the finished product is, "that hurts my eyes." You can disagree, you can cite your own direct aesthetic reaction, but there is no higher fashion authority--even of numbers--which is going to change my mind just by virtue of its position.
(Abhi, I have nothing against Animal prints in general, I just think it neither matches nor clashes harmoniously with these colors.)
There's a lot of haute couture out there that I think is Fugly. In fact, I believe the original fugly blog devotes half of its entries to haute couture.
And pointing out the one google image that struck me as being of a fugly outfit does not in any way comment on her as a person or this whole affair which I have yet to catch up on.
Saheli - I'm thinking a less busy zebra print sans beading and with the brilliant blue might be been (still rather showy and daring but) less McNasty.
Also - what is UP with her watch being the size of her head?
Actually, I love her outfit. Animal print can be overdone...but I hardly notice it, here. And I love the sea of blue!
For some reason the first person/thing I thought about when I saw that photo was Deanna Troi from Star Trek:TNG...
Fire Fly,
more generally, don't jump to assumptions about my actions, it's really annoying. You've now read Saheli's comment about how this got posted. You also know that there is a whole blog (Bollywood Fugly) devoted to making fun of male and female Bollywood stars for their appearance. But in general, there's no reason to go on the attack when you have as little information as you had about somebody's motives.
I like it! I don't think's it's overpowering/tacky. If I was her stylist, th one change I would've made was the embroidery, it's too much ..it clashes with the earings even tho' it's the same color.
Go BOLLYwood
What moon? You mean, those moons? YEAH. But then, you've got to give it to her for turning total bodaciousness to extreme fuglitude.
Sin's not here yet, Ennis. But for whatever my two cents are worth:
I think it's a tough outfit to pull off, but it's only fugly if you can't, right? She's got that lovely long neck, (and her tatas fill that top ou....wait! I think I just made a bad pun) and with her makeup and coloring in general...not bad at all. (ok the bag is ugly. I'll give you that.)
the bag, the watch, the excess dark eye shadow, and that pinky ring -- gotta go. otherwise, i wouldn't wear it, but i kinda like it.
she is pharoh.
You know Ennis means serious business when he writes a six-sentence post dissing a Bollywood celebrity's choice of colors and patterns. I mean, that's, like, a friggin' dissertation on postmodern South Asian feminism! Ennis, you are a misogynist and a disgrace to the South Asian community.
Hmm..I dont care about the wrapping..but me likey the Candy !!
Take away the multiblue thing and the watch, and it's all good. In fact, it's great. Maybe someone gave it to her to hold.
The multicoloured stones used as embroidery on glaringly tacky coloured saris thang was very trendy a year or two ago. Ick.
Shame, because those I know who've seen these people up close and personal actually say Shilpa is among the real beauties in the business and doesn't need all the glitter. She was lovely in Phir Milenge.
Aww come on now - I love collarbone touching earrings (on the right neck). They make me happy =)
Ennis - I'm with you on this outfit - not feelin' it whatsoever - and she's wearing too much makeup.
My humble effort towards appeasing the ladies in the house:
Q: What did Tarzan say when he saw a leopard coming his way?
A: Ah finally, some new underwear
I looked at the photo and must say that her outfit was the last thing on my mind.
I think it is the constipated expression on her face. Not that the dress is exactly subtle and sexy.
I don't feel that strongly to label the outfit as 'fugly'. It's not the best, but certainly not the worst outfit a Bollywood awards show/premiere has provided over the years...
What a sexy outfit!
I think she looks sexy with or without the outfit.
'churaake dil mera, goriya chali...':) Even in that song she wore some kinda tiger printed skirt and she looked hot in those long boots.
Its not a man's job to analyse outfits..fall back
ennis paaji control!
Can't focus on the outfit - distracted by other things, 2 things to be specific.
I agree with espressa (#25)... I wouldn't wear it either, but I kinda like it.
That wrist watch is fugly. Btw, she has longer fingers than most Indian men, if you know what I mean.
Can't focus on the outfit - distracted by other things, 2 things to be specific.
Same here.
me too!! sexiest collarbones EVER.
:-) Here & Here & Here & Here & Here & Here
I'm assuming she wears animal print clothing to highlight her work for PETA-India, and make more mindless Indians aware of what they are doing to the environment.
... make more mindless Indians aware ...
and another one steps in the dung
There must be some geologist synchronicity, which includes owning animal-print underoos.
As for overwear, I've always considered animal-print anything quite tacky, no matter the outfit or occasion. It's just too much.
Abhi,
I'm sure the burning question on all the ladies..and perhaps some of the men ("not that there's anything wrong with that...") is boxers or briefs(a la Partyboy from Jackass)?
By the way Abhi you got props in the latest issue of Indian American Magazine (the one with NYPDesi cover) Congrats.
Agree with JOAT. Shetty's able to pull it off - looks great to me. Would have preferred to read something about her handling BB with poise and restraint. Less interested in her 'external' style right now.
Zed - see the post just before this one - it's about the ramifications of the victory.
Why no posts on her poise and restraint? Because here in the US I haven't seen the show, only a few snippets on youtube. People have been talking about that topic plenty in the comments though.
Yo! is it me or do her bones and clevage make that look like a big heart symbol?
And yeah, I stopped wondering about the animal prints, she has been doing it for a long time now.
I find this outfit horribly fugly. I love animal print but not the way she's put together this fug-i-licious outfit.
It is kinda fug.
Then again, you should see what we're all wearing while we blog....
Ah Ennis-
You are missing out! I was out of the loop re: the BB affair but I've caught up and am quite impressed overall by how sane and gracious she remained. Some might say she was 'acting' and 'fake' throughout but politeness and civility can at times be a much-needed act, no? RE: whether it's fugly -- big bold fashion statements are what I expect from certain stars. I wouldn't want Indian stars getting all 'simple' (read: boring) and 'safe' for our North American palate. Mix fabrics and colors, I say! I wonder if it was a conscious decision, given her work with PETA? Anyway, I look forward to seeing you post other Bollywood fug that lives up to the accusation ;).
The neckline and fabric make it dowdy for me, not so much fugly. The bag is just kind of pitiful. I am that lethal combination of being Tamil AND a bellydancer so I shrug at the leopard-print/turquoise gem combo....
haters
i noticed that too !!!
Reminds me of Smita Smitten- The Showbiz Kitten from Goodness Gracious Me
I apologise. A job that doesn't include an internet connection has limited my online travels severely, but fear not Ennis! I'm here at last!
Re: outfit - the animal print combined with what seem to be fairly tasteless rhinestones around the collar, that's just the first thing that jumps out at me. The earrings are a bit over the top, but they're not hitting mad levels of fugly. It's the watch and the purse that are killing me slowly; in a look that's basically going for elegance, the massive timepiece just stands out, and not in a good way. The purse is also kind of frumpy, I think...more a "funky piece for the busy mother" than anything else; there's no real grace or style to what's basically a shiny bag.
On the other hand, I *do* like the blue. It's a good colour for her, and I actually think that the combination of cuts and deconstruction/layering of the fabric is an interesting take on the typical sari. But barring her bazongas, because as we all know, I'm GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY, the first thing that my eye was drawn to was the watch. It's a nice accessory, just not for this outfit.
And now I'm spent.
Her eyebrows scare me. Damn.
Unless this article is filed under "humour", I have to question the timing, considering what's been happening with Shilpa in Britain during the past few weeks and her recent triumph & vindication. Was this really necessary right now ? Et tu, Ennis ?
See comments #13 and #16.
Hmmmm. Okay Ennis ;)
Anyway, it's not your article I was questioning (not that I necessarily agree with it), but the timing. My first reaction was "Not now, dammit !".
But at least your motivations weren't negative, even though I do think it's the wrong time for all this, so it's all good. Don't worry.
As a point of contrast, I recommend you (or someone else here) try to find a photo taken of her after her recent interview with Sky News anchor Kay Burley; Britain's Daily Express newspaper had a really nice pic of her on the front page on Thursday but I can't find it online. She looked quite stunning.
Meena, I feel you. Those damn' 'brows are TERRIFYING.
What one person finds fugly..the next person won't. I express my sympathy 2 u Ennis if you are so insecure in yourself that you feel it necessary 2 put someone else down...not even being able 2 comment on the individual as a person but in the way they dress! Wud luv 2 c ur reaction if u put a picture up of yourself and allowed people 2 comment- Do u fink u wud agree if they left messages that were less than positive?! May give ur ego less of a boost hey. Much Luv x
Dear Jaheira, if you're so outraged, then please try this on for size.
bottom line is that Aishwarya Rai is most beautiful woman in the world. dont agrue it the truth can never change.
haters
what is it with certain desi men's knee-jerk "aishwarya is goddess, i hate shilpa" reactions. i don't get it. shilpa, I love you. don't listen to them.
