Congrats, Aarti!Profiles
The Hill has more beautiful people for us, 40 more, in fact. The first one caught tipster DTK’s attention (thanks!).
Aarti Nayak, scheduler for Rep. Julia Carson (D-Ind.), doesn’t like skiing one bit, but that’s where she met her husband, Dave — on the slopes.
“He had a little blond girlfriend at the time,” she says with a wry smile. But when Nayak came into the picture, well, the blond was history. They have been married since September. She hopes to have kids.
Considering today’s hot comment threads/topics, it seems appropriate to wonder what kind of wedding they had?
Was it meant to be? Nayak reads astrological signs, although she’s not a fervent believer.
During college at Virginia Tech, she and a friend wrote blurbs on astrological signs for the Eccentric, a student newspaper — they were called the “psychic sisters.”
At any rate, she doesn’t look one bit “psychic.”
What the H-E-double-toothpicks does a “psychic” look like? Enough with this paranormal profiling!
The first-generation American from an Indian family twirls her dark, curly hair, which her friends have compared to singer-model Toni Braxton’s locks.
Let me channel “chip-on-her-shoulder-Auntie”: “Vy they had to compare her to Toni Braxton? Minnie Driver also has such hair! Harrumph! Racist!” ;)
But makeup is not very important to her.
“I don’t care anymore,” she explains.
Even about lipgloss?? Say it isn’t so, my sweet sister…perhaps you just need some Hindu lips.
When it comes to beauty, Nayak is gently scornful of contests and pageants. She said one of their past interns participated in pageants and waved the Miss America wave.
“Who are these girls anyway?” she asks skeptically.
Oh, and as for her auspicious placement at the top of the list:
Other than the Top 10 , the rest of these beautiful people are not ranked in any specific order.
Suuuuuuuuuure they aren’t.

Hey, whattabout Karl Rove. Everyone knows he has a way with the ladies.
It used to be Asian girls we were worried about and now these pretty Indians have started taking away the cute white guys as well. Dave and I had a real thing you know, I even pretended to like skiing to be with him. Why can't she find one of her own?
LBG, I can't wait for the inevitable, confused soul who thinks you're serious...you didn't provide a disclaimer. ;)
2 thumbs up, LittleBlondGirl. What's with all the hot brown sistas going after white girls. Who am I suppossed to date? Ann Coulter? I don't have Dinesh D'Souza's looks.
What's with all the hot brown sistas going after white girls.
uh, if hot brown sistas are going after white girls you've got two problems on your hands...
Thanks BBM. Yeah what's up with that? Who are these girls? Do you like skiing?
errr...should've been "white dudes." But that's a problem too.
Good luck to them, let colours mix! There is some goodness in this world, let it SHINE!!
Is that like cricket?
You don't have to tell me about it, Razib.
LBG and BBA/BBM, you all should get together :)
ANNA, I think #10 on the original top 10 list is desi also (or her parents are both of "Indian origin," which I assume means desi, not American Indian).
Anna, you missed the other Indian that DID make it into the top 10 at #10 (Jamie Skipper)!! However I think Aarti and her could probably have switched places on the listing IMHO :-P . Shame on you as she is a Christian as well, much like yourself!! It's easy to get overlooked when you don't have a completely desi-fied name!!
Yeah, Jaime Skipper #10 got skipped. And she's REPUBLICAN! Take that, Abhi.
BBM, I meant skiing like skiing silly.
little blonde girl, Just say No.
Thanks for delurking, just to shame me.
You're right, how dare I overlook a Christian whom I did not see, since the tipster sent me to a different link than this:
http://thehill.com/cover-stories/the-50-most-beautiful-people-on-capitol-hill---top-10-2007-07-24.html
Despite my being swamped at work AND our being on hiatus here at SM, you are so right, I should have spent hours combing through fluff to make sure I didn't give people an opportunity to point at me and laugh like Nelson. Whatever was I thinking.
Seriously-- I can give you guys one of two things: "light" posts like this and the ones I've done recently, which don't take a toll on me, time and effort wise, so there's at least SOME new content here
or
no posts at all, if we're going to play the "unless it's perfect, don't bother!" game.
Which would you prefer?
LBG: Wow, I never dated a celebrity.
By the way I have loved both these posts. I'm not saying that to be sycophantic, just saying it because I am giggling in my office trying to keep my workmates from realizing that I am reading a faux conversation between BBM/LBG, not crunching crime stats.
No, since I'm Greek Orthodox. ;)
And damnit, I'm not a Republican! I haven't been since 2000, when McCain South Carolina smear how dare they blah blah blah...
I'm claiming the honorary Tamil status which was conferred upon me two meetups ago and that is ALL. Whew. That was close.
Geez, Anna you took that way too personally! I didn't mean any offense...just wanted to point out an omission that I thought was relevant when I decided to check the link for top 10 and noticed the other desi. I guess I'm better off lurking! The one time I took the time to slack from work and actually provide a comment...my bad!
“Considering today’s hot comment threads/topics, it seems appropriate to wonder what kind of wedding they had?”
I think it was a modest one, substance and style over grandeur. I think they both love food, so more concentration was given to the menu.
As for the ceremony, traditional all the way, (whatever traditions they uphold). The Mahraj or priest would have been educated and cool, and made the guest laugh with his sly wit.
First dance, “earth angel” by the penguins or (but not that likely) “tery bin” by Nusrat fateh Ail Khan.
And the drunk uncle with the white suit jacket would have got arrested for indecent exposure!
Well that’s how I imagined it. ;)
Light posts anna keep them coming, I thought you all were going on a break??
That fact you guys are still posting at this rate earns much respect! So Rezpect!
Well, after three years of being criticized for my shitty writing, my obesity, my black skin, my anti-Hindu bias, my anti-Muslim prejudice and my status as a single female (among other things), I've learned to take everything at its worst possible meaning, especially if such a sassy comment is coming from someone who has never spoken here before, thus preventing me from having any context for their words. I'm sorry I took it so personally, if you didn't mean it the way I thought you did. Wow, that was convoluted. Maybe they were right about the writing. ;)
No, you are not better off lurking. I love when people delurk. I work hard to make this place open and safe and I would be sad if I, of all people, were the reason you felt that way. Again, I'm sorry. The thing is, if you ARE a lurker, then you know that I'm a lightning rodd for assholery, so perhaps that can provide you with some context for my meowing and hissing. I promise, I can haz senz of humor? Rly!
Marv, you don't have to lurk, just maybe rephrase next time :)
Well maybe it's like how people say they read Playboy for the articles but I usually RSS SM and read the posts and don't really read through or post much comments at all, especially since I usually read the posts much later and everything that needed to be said probably already has been said. Come to think of it, I may have posted once or twice before, as well as tried to submit a topic for a post, but that was a really long time ago. But hey, some participation is better than none, and even then, at least I'm a fan of the site!
and Anna, you take too much abuse...so, relax during the breathers between posts and have some fun on the hiatus!
For the second time today, beta...you are teh good. ;)
Dude, I was shocked ANYONE thought I was...we get slammed all the time for leaning too left. For a second I was like, w00t, we're more balanced! :D
Its funny that I never dated a brown girl in my life but I feel just a lil bit jealous that this cutie is married to Mr.Chickenbreast, I never thought I would be a person who would care about 'losing people' from our race but I guess I am wrong..Over the last year or so I've come to realize how much I *heart* brown, I guess I am getting older or may be this is just a phase
As far as "three years of being criticized for my shitty writing, my obesity, my black skin, my anti-Hindu bias, my anti-Muslim prejudice and my status as a single female (among other things)" is sounds like people are being harsh and false just because they can. So I guess I can see how you came at that comment...who knew blogging commenters could be so mean? (not me!)
Awww, thanks for being so understanding. Now I'm really glad you delurked. You're niiiiice. :)
marv, juz make sure to use smiley faces & shit. i could tell you were being tongue & cheek, but look the proportion of misunderstandings of tone that occur in emails and you'll realize why those little signals are so necessary.
Sepia ladies, why do you resist the manly charms of Ramesh Ponnuru ? He is like a young, bronze William F. Buckley. Surely it was an oversight that he did not make the list
#6 diana oo was born in rangoon (likely ethnic burman with that name), but spend 14 years in sri lanka between ages 1 and 15.
That's silly! I think you're lovely, and funny which is even better than that. :)
There's an old saw that politics is show business for ugly people, and that list of so-called hot people tends to prove that.
kannan, by "chickenbreast" you mean "white meat"? :)
Anna,
You are great and I love your posts and insights.
But seriously, these are the most attractive people in DC? Note to self--nix Acela plans ASAP. Have you guys been to SoHo or London?
Tho' given comment #32, I would concede that Diana Oo can get kotu roti w/ me anytime at New Asha on
Staten Island (even if it's a bit of a schlep for me).
Camille,
chickenbreast/whitemeat/paneer -all the same...Anything that is bland, white and has no flavor. I've known some white guys date really hot desi women, boring as hell, bring nothing to the table in terms of value, they are just pre qualified because of their race..Ohh well thats the way of the world.
Totally offtopic-I would be curious to know where the majority of our SM readers reside, I think we should have a poll
"But seriously, these are the most attractive people in DC? Note to self--nix Acela plans ASAP. Have you guys been to SoHo or London?"
Ummm...no. If you read the post, it's specifically ranking a subsection of people in DC, i.e. those working on the Hill.
I live in the Village by the way, and most desis that frequent SoHo look too much like Indian Barbies and Kens.
Sepia ladies, why do you resist the manly charms of Ramesh Ponnuru ?
Eeeeewwww, 'cuz he looks too much like my brother, is a Republikkkkkan and married a nice girl named April.
You mean they are not anatomically correct? Creepy...
No louiecypher, more like this

desi-fied name!!
---------------------
One of my cousin’s Christian friend named his son Bill and ..he revealed later that the full name is Bill Clinton and he named his son after Bill Clinton because his son was born after the historic visit of the great President Bill Clinton to Hyderabad ,who transformed Indo-US relations to a strategic level. Well what can I say, other than that 5000 years of Indian civilization and culture couldn’t convince him to have a ethnic Indian name for his son. i know people naming their children with names like Ghandi and Nehru in Andhra, which are surnames of our great leaders. so its an individual choice and i respect that. Just facinated by the concept "desi-fied" names..
Monica is an Indian name.
Out of curiosity, how is it that you've never managed to date a brown girl? Where did you grow up and where are you now?
Reverse exotification? :)
I am starting to notice a trend....brown desi men seem to get ignored lately in most 'beautiful people' list. Sendhil didn't make it to People's list and Sanjaya only got an honorable mention. I would be miffed I if I was Bobby Jindal.
Really? I seem to recall Sanjay Gupta, the Chopra boys and the LOST dude being all over those silly lists.
Sanjay Gupta and the Chopra boys was 4-5 years ago. I forgot about Naveen Andrews....as I thought he was just a obligatory put in. Come On...Naveen is about as pretty as Bobby Jindal.

Common man, this is our India's Bill Clinton.i am sure he will do a better job!
Oh I agree, nothing vaguely pretty about Naveen to me but he always seems to be on those things. Then Parminder Nagra was the token pretty brown girl on those lists until you know who took over.
Please , for the love of all that is desi, spell it G-A-N-D-H-I !
please don't tell me that white automatically qualifies one as boring, and brown as interesting? if so, i (and others, i am sure) will attest to the opposite. and please do tell about the lack of brown women in your life - out of volition? or lack of numbers in the gegraphical area? or some other reason?
not just in the village - NYC has an abnormal amount of such desis (and non-desis, too). but AJ, please look past the cover - i've been known to (occasionally) resemble them, as well!Who??

Sorry for the Typographical mistake.
Oh my goodness, that's why I almost didn't ask. :) The trolls, they'll be all over this like sharks on me-flavored chum. Eeeeep.
No, really, I'm having a blank kind of day and I was like...wait, who do they mean??
>Sendhil didn't make it to People's list
Actually, he was named as one of the Top 100 Most Beautiful People, but for some reason the magazine only featured 80. Sadly, the Mohindelicious goodness was cut. *sniff*
Her royal ubiquitousness :)
don't forget gwen stefani
AK,
read again! I said 'some' S followed by an O followed by a M followed by an E
DOH!!!!!
kannan - i can read just fine, thank you. despite the 'some' disclaimer, i was objecting to the generalization of even some (really, any) white people as bland. of course, there are white people who are bland, but obviosly, that can apply across any race or ethnicity.
LOL I knew you were going in that direction, I should have clarified better..do your thing sir, to each his own!
Did anyone notice that Number 10 on the list is also an Indian girl?

Scroll to the bottom. Her name is Jamie Skipper.
Scroll to comment #11. Then you'll see that three other anyones did.
no worries. from your other comments, i assumed there were no real prejudiced undertones there. fyi - that's ma'am to you :) or not; i hate being called ma'am.
This reminds me of the time my cousin told her husband that even a million of him wouldn't equal one Hrithik Roshan...the way she said it (it was part of a larger general conversation we all were having) was hilarious and it's become like a family joke (her and her husband get along great by the way). You had to be there I guess...
Runa, help your son connect with half his roots by having him watch this awesome video for one of the most recent UK bhangra releases...it ain't too pretty but it's HARD CORE.
Also I've never dated an Indian girl either, probably partly because so many of the hot ones like the two on this list are into white dudes.
Aarti looks good, but not "hot".
As usual, all the people on the list look "good" but not so "hot".
And it's true, you see exceptionally beautiful looking people in ordinary life who don't get recognized because they are just ordinary wage earners trying to pay the bills.
I've noticed this too. What is up with that?
Generalize much? What about the not-so-hot desi girls who date White guys? Maybe, just maybe, it's just about two people falling for each other, ethnicity/religion/tax bracket be damned.
Inter-racial couples of all backgrounds face disparenging remarks from each of their "own kind". Like, "why do our black men go pass up fine sistahs for ugly white girls", etc.
It's jealousy plain and simple.
Let people be with who they want and don't hate just coz they don't want to be with you.
Sheetal or Iced Latte: please choose one handle and stick with it, it's the courteous thing to do.
Interesting to note that 5 out of the top ten lookers in that list are non-whites: 3 african-americans, a burmese and an indian.
That and the remark about the "little blonde" being replaced by the indian girl tells me that this list was concocted by a politically correct multi-racial group of writers.
"Also I've never dated an Indian girl either, probably partly because so many of the hot ones like the two on this list are into white dudes."
its interesting that you bring this up..We have parallels with the asian community. I've heard/seen that before. Hot lil Korean spinner would rather hook up with tall lanky white dude than someone from her race and its kind of common because I know a lot of my asian brothers who want to date from their race gripe and bitch about it:) Its almost like an invisible social hierarchy And the same goes for desi guys, I have a lot of friends who date white girls just because they think it brings them more social value " Look at me FOB minority guy pulling from the majority race" However for me its never really been race, its whether I was attracted to the person or not and it so happens I have never gone brown :)
Kannan:
What's a spinner?
Kannan:
I think part of the issue may be that Asian cultures are more traditional in terms of gender roles and it may be that the expectations that the Asian women feel they might have to live up to (or down to, depending on one's viewpoint), may not factor in a relationship with an American or European white man.

Dang, that's overrepresentation by a factor of 6 (4% of Hill Hotties vs. 2/3 of 1% of the pop at large).
I actually think this episode of Desi Dilemmas addresses some of the challenges of dating within-(ethnic)group. They apply to everyone, but when you're a minority, the odds are lower (even if the %s are consistent).
