DC SMeetup: a Tardy Writeup of Lucky no. 7Meetups!
Those who are persistent eventually defeat even the steeliest resolve to procrastinate. I keed. DC’s last meetup was massive and most definitely fun. We descended upon Amma like a Mongol horde, pillaging every bit of delicious Southie food we spied. Oh, wait…the Mongols ate North Indian foo-…never mind.
Amma made like old skool Vanessa and went and saved the best for last— even though he wasn’t there, YoDad arranged dessert for everyone at the meetup. We gobbled gulab jamuns, much to our collective surprise and delight, thanks to his thoughtful planning. New York may have the cool factor, SF may be hipster heaven, but DC has Abhi’s father, a.k.a. the Grandfather of the Mutiny. Take THAT, other cities!
And now, the moment one of you named No Desh has been waiting for: tabla roll, please…the Flickr photoset for D.C.’s seventh meetup has been hurriedly finished (i.e. the pics were split between two cameras, and for the last 20 mins, I was frantically DLing two dozen files, only to immediately upload them to the “official album”).
All evidence which could destroy potential Senate campaigns is available for your amusement via this “public” link. Aw, come on, people…it’s only six weeks late. Unless you’re a girl and in college, that’s never a huge problem. ;)
SM Meetups in DC— hot like your Amma’s meen kari, ya heard?

Okay, so when's the Maximum City discussion?
I still believe that paneer dosa (bottom left) is an abomination. That is all.
My leg hurts. :) Owwww.
I feel notoriously famous now... I just wanted to see the pics b/c I knew one of the folks who was there there and had a really good time, tis all.

Mockable metaphor or not, that does seem harsh!
wow, you guys took up 2 tables! impressive!
Yum!!! Is that Ghee roast or Mysore Masala dosa? (mouth watering...) Is the desi restaurant open yet?
Just to give Anna some grief, the choice of a different language :-)
Annaji, khana toh bada lazzatdaar dikh raha hai aur jama hui junta badi mazedaar. Vaise un dollaron ka kissa toh hamen nahi samajh aaya. Kaash hum bhi vahan tashreef laa sake hote.
any idea when the next dc subcontinental drift will be?
Subcontinental drift comes back first Sunday of September.

pingpong:
Paneer dosa the person knows I adore her. Paneer dosa the...um...dosa IS an abomination. I will register an official Lemurian protest against the co-opting of our pure Southern cuisine. ;)
Babu, it's Mysore Masala Dosa. My fave. :)
Apparently it's all about the Jacksons, baby!
Oye..pictures like this only fan the flame for moving to DC. Been wanting to do it for some time now...ready to spread my wings and meet new and exciting people. =)
Thanks for holding the meetup!
i never liked resturaunt dosas....i tend to stick to either the uttapams or the south indian thalis.
ve are indian. no $ex here.
I can only imagine your take on the Vodka Pani Puri concoction at Earth NYC.
i think the world is going to end soon...
Hahaha! Yes, i know Anna Akka is fond of me, as I am of her:P But, I want to set the record straight: I never declared myself a paneer dosa (I think a certain someone else mentioned it, hehe...) and I actually do think they are quite yucky.
That is all.
P.S. The SMeetup was the usual barrel of dirty jokes and laughs.
Wait wait, what? Vodka Pani Puri? I have got to hear this.

i like ketchup with my dosa at home....
Puli, after I give you an inappropriate hug the first time I meet you, I'm going to pinch your ear for that. What an atrocity...you, my fellow Lemurian, should know better.
meh...ill eat anything (veg). im not very picky...
come to think of it....any food tastes good to me...
I used to like that as a kid but now I can't even think about eating dosa without dahi chutney. Sambar I can take or leave but a creamy chutney is key!
Hey, I love ketchup too, and I'll admit to eating dosa with it sometimes. Anna, what happened to diversity and freedom of choice? :p ;)
What constitutes an inappropriate hug?
enquiring minds want to know... (i think i just dated myself)
Well, I'm a born-and-raised Californian and so I'm far more touchy-feely than my right coast counterparts. So I tend to hug everyone, even if I've never met them before. This results in all sorts of hilarity, especially when I throw my arms around the neck of some staid DBD who respects the vomen and vatnot. ;)
I think I started saying it at one of the DC meetups, when I kept getting up to hug people and one of them was like, "I wasn't expecting that."
me: "Too soon?"
him: "Kinda."
me: "Maybe the second time I had met you, it would've been more appropriate?"
him: (pauses) "Yeah. Yeah, why not? Then you're no longer a stranger, right?"
me: "I am ALWAYS stranger"
(shout out to all the Depeche Mode-heads in the hizzy)
Anyway, after that, I went up to each of the latecomers and announced, "here, have an inappropriate hug", which made the whole thing a bit funny. And it has stuck. So, if I've never met you before, and you're a somewhat reserved person, and I pounce on you like a puppy, there's a good chance I'm being inappropriate.
That and it just sounds naughty.
ketchup on your dosa? Ugh, excuse me while I hurl. That is almost -- ALMOST -- as bad as paneer dosa.
Puli, she might grab your ass. Just saying.
;)
Puli's not a girl, therefore no such luck with the kundi-grabbing.
no. def not a girl. a slightly stiff guy actually.
See?? TOTALLY inappropriate. :D
stiff? no..i mean ridged. wait! no...thats not what i meant...errr..
"Ridged" or "RIGID", ada?
No, not on the dosa - but on the side, next to coconut chutney and sambhar. :D
Different strokes for different folks!! Looks like puli and moi will have to start a group to put an end to all this discrimination by the majority. ;) :p
yeah. i dont pay attn to spelling on blogposts. sorry....its amazing how many times ive mis smelled "brown" while typinh it into the comment spam field...
Hugs are good. I will give hugs to people I meet for the first time (e.g. friend of a friend), though also keeping their body-language in mind. People need to give and receive more hugs!!! The only inappropriate hug is the stiff or the inverted V one. :)
O
Amit, I'll try not to judge. It's not working, though ;) What is an "inverted V hug?"
im too puritanical to even know what that means...
The half-assed hug, where you're doing it out of obligation or something and your shoulders may meet but the rest of you is faaaaar apart. Also known as the hug hetero guys give each other, lest they turn gay. I keed, I keed. All hugs are good hugs. :)
Camille,
If you and I ever have lunch together it will be pretty interesting;-)
I love ketchup and here are my gross-inducing combos:
Idlis and ketchup
Not just Dosas but also Uttapam , Adai with ketchup
Curd rice and ketchup
Marie Biscuits and ketchup
The inverted V hug usually happens when both parties are not that invested in the hug, so their legs remain far apart, and they lean in to give a weak hug, without stepping close enough to give a warm hug, so it looks like an inverted V. :D
i like to call that the "ex-girlfriend after a nasty fall out hug"
Oh, is the inverted V like the "I am hugging you like you carry TB" hug? Like the arms barely reach around someone's back? Dude, I would rather people not hug than hug like that. I, myself, am a fan of the "side-hug" (in the event that a full-on hug won't work).
Runa, I'm just being vulgar and rude. I would not actually feel nauseous if someone ate dosa and ketchup -- I don't like ketchup in general (too sweet), unless it is mixed up with mayo and mustard, a la hamburger :) If I can watch my best friend put equal in her ketchup to make "sweet and sour sauce" for her fries, I can stomach ketchup idli. ;) I just love sambar so much, I can't understand eating dosa or idli with anything but sambar and coconut chutney. Mmmm, I'm making myself hungry. Are Marie biscuits those hard, shortbread tea cookies?
every time a stranger hugs me i get a look of death on my face. my family makes fun of that....
puli - you hug your ex-gfs after a nasty fall out? that's quite generous of you. i prefer to run - or give dirty looks :)
runa, i just ate lunch - could you not have waited to post that list?
Camille,
Aargh!
Marie biscuits = round teatime biscuits made by the Parle Company in India .Along with Glucose biscuits , I think every DBD must have had these. They are hard - not sure if they classify as shortbread
Agreed that sambhar, chutney is the best - but sometimes a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do !
i used to do that. i figured that life is too short though...
runa - i love parles - 3 for $1 at patel bros! he he
yikes...
i could never eat those. every one else in my famiy goes ga-ga for them though.
So while every one else goes "ga -ga", you go "gag gag" ;-)
The proper desi way to eat them is to dip them into a mug of steaming chai - bliss!
ak, another reason to love parle -GRuna, I had the unfortunate sinking feeling that those were the biscuits you were talking about. You really eat them with ketchup? Do you eat them with ketchup while drinking chai? If so, why???
I thought the hetero-guy hug is when guys grab one another's hand (not interlinked, but clasped), pull that hand to their chest in a kind of "bro!" movement, and then use the unoccupied arm to semi-hug their fellow hetero guy friend. Does that description even make sense? I had a guy friend give me a hetero-guy hug and didn't know whether to be amused, offended, or pleased to have broken down gender-barriers around hugs ;)
Actually the Equal + ketchup was not as gross as it looked. She did it so casually (hoping I wouldn't notice) until I stopped midsentence and said, "Did you just...?" to which she replied, "Yes. This is how we do!" (she then told an anecdote about Chinese-Americans not being able to get sweet and sour sauce back in the day, this being her grandma's approximation, etc., etc.) I tried it... didn't love it, but it did taste relatively similar to sweet and sour sauce (at least for dipping purposes), consistency aside.
runa, i could eat an entire packet (or two) with chai...
not even sure how to respond to that.
Oh Camille, even I draw the line somewhere. I either dip them in chai or with ketchup as a snack. BTW, Marie biscuit topped with Mango achar ( homemade or Bedekar or in desperation ANY brand ) is also a great snack.
Is this a threadjack or what ???
Puli, I messed up in my comment. I meant to say " to not have post-break-up sex."
Anyway, I was just teasing you. No hard feelings. :)
any plans for a tgiving dc meetup? at this rate ill have to either meetup when i see parents/friends in md or drive/fly up to sf from oc. taz host la meetup?
i'm ready for another meetup. aren't we supposed to do one at somebody's house? let's go people.
