“...on the internet I can be just as tall as you.”Video

Australian-based Boymongoose is back with another video gem from their 2006 album Christmas in Asia Minor. You may remember the 12 Days of Christmas song we posted back then. Here is the video to Single Girls set to the music of Jingle Bells. Make sure to play this at your desi Holiday party. It will definitely be spinning here at our North Dakota headquarters come December.

It's that time of year again and, even if you've seen Boymongoose's 12 days of Christmas a dozen times, as my wife and I have, it's worth seeing again. Boymongoose, according to his website, is "an Indian Christmas Popstar who...

i liked 12 days much better, as well - much more encompassing and insightful. glad to see they didn't get rid of their lead singer, though.

Interesting juxtaposition:

Arty folks featured in Sepia are (still) trying to make a career off their parents' accents (and strange traditions)

Meanwhile, IndiaMike is seeing a flood of authentic-accented gora guys and gals falling for the bad-accented home folk and moving to Desh.

Ha. Ha. Ha. But OUCH!

That's why I'm a believer in the old arranged marriage system. Everyone, regardless of height, looks or personality, is GUARANTEED a spouse. Equality oppurtunity employer. Whereas the dating game is cruel and will leave half of us spinsters and spinmeisters.

I wonder what HMF will say about the part where he pays only half the dinner bill (meant to make the guy look like a tightwad to boot).

Not as good as "12 days," but still funny.

Where are the badmash guys? Is Amitabh still running for Prime Minister?

Had I been born in a traditional Indian village I'd be a grandparent by now. Here? I'm still making the rounds of the dating scene and am no better off than high school when I started. One after the other after the other after the other. No result.

Help!?

The badmash comics are nowhere to be found on the internet anylonger (i tried =[) and they no longer make them. The Badmash guys are now making animated videos and they can be found at http://www.badmash.tv/.

Still digging the animation style and the fact that they make their own music.

There's a 'Jib-Jab' effect to these types of animations. Your first piece is totally fresh, delightfully amateurish, and funny as a result. Then, unless you come with something totally news, it's hard to recapture the same buzz again.

Forgot to reply about badmash.

I'm thinking of putting a full archive of our comics online sometime soon - will let everyone know once it is up and running.

As for the studio, we are working on an animated sitcom called Doubtsourcing (should have the pilot done in a few months) - you can see a few of our Amitabh videos at www.dishoom2008.com - my favorite is the Black or White piece.

Two things:

1. Racking up video game points - not the type of nerdiness usually associated with desi boys (maybe we're borrowing a nerdiness image here?). In fact, many of them, esp. ABDs, often have interests outside of home that they actively pursue. They may not be ladies men (and there's *nothing* wrong with that), but that's a very different thing from saying they live with their parents and are nerds or even unsocial.

2. If this is about DBDs (and in the case of many an ABD), they can easily go to Desh and fix the problem if they choose to. There are some I know who are opposed to doing this but have no luck in the dating scene either, but they are absolutely not the losers this video shows them to be.

3. If this is about ABDs (I just mean Western born), what the hell is the accent for?

Oh, wait a sec - this has to be about desis in Desh!. But then why are they vegging out with video games and trying to find dates at all. Nobody has to reach 38 unmarried in Desh unless they want to.

It's not so easy when
1. there is a gulf of cultural difference between you and the prospective matches you are introduced to in Desh
2. you are an ABD woman

Nobody has to reach 38 unmarried in Desh unless they want to.

That's true but it's different for ABDs, even if we do make a trip to Desh in search of a husband or wife.

No DBD would waste her time on making a video like that, mostly because the DBD sense of entertainment/art is different from aping Christmas songs and dowry/IT/butter chicken stereotypes. The accent itself is a dead giveaway.

I actually don't like the DBD/ABD distinction. In my view, there is a generation of Desi people born outside India, who have been immersed (or drowned, depending on your POV) in non-Desi cultures more than Desi ones, during a time when India was poor and isolated from the world, and the world had a poor view of India. This generation worries a lot about cultural identity, sometimes tries to build an identity around accents, tastes etc.

The current generation, specifically the one after WWW and satellite TV, is better grounded in both cultures, which themselves have moved a lot closer than before. They move between their Desh/non-Desh skins a lot more freely, and has a rather pragmatic view of culture.

The DBD/ABD distinction picks out the two very ends of a moving scale, pretty soon a lot more people will be in the middle than at those ends. The categories are already rather fuzzy, and will only grow fuzzier.

But not in a marriage sense. Most folks have a pretty good mental image of who they want to be with long term. And usually that person is a close facsimile of themselves. Should said person not find facsimile by age 29 that's when the drinking really ramps up :)

Tell me about it! Me, Anna, probably ever mutineer on here with the exception of the happily married Amardeep can hold our own when it comes to drinking, thanks to hitting the big 3oh single. Are we desis the only ones who obsess over this? Sometimes I wonder. My non-desi friends seem to be having the time of their lives, 30 is the new 20 and all that. Maybe they're just good at faking?

I want to state the obvious. Sepia Mutiny is a cluster of smart, professional, blogging Amdesis from both sides of the gender gap and all born in the 70s. How come no hookups? From a desi aunty perspective y'all are suitable matches for each other so what gives? Political differences? That doesn't fly from an aunty's perspective. Desi marriage is all about compromise. I mean, if having all of this in common and none of you managed to date, mate and wed by now, what hope is there for the rest of us? Sepia destiny bah humbug!

Non-desis don't have the blast furnace like pressure to get married starting oh about 10 seconds after they graduate college. 30 can be the new 20 if you truly believe it. Trouble is most desis think 30 is the new 45 :(

I also think that as desi's we are often more judgemental of other desis than non-desis. Does anybody else feel this way? I know it's not right, but I often will judge a desi guy who is a drunk, obnoxious slob in a bar more harshly than a non-desi. I will also do the same when I see a desi guy that doesn't dress well or is just acting like an idiot in public.....maybe it's the whole concept of judging your own because you also know that people will compare you to them-like my non desi friends will think all indians do this or that based on just a small few, which I also know isn't right....but I wonder if others feel this way?

Not just desi marriage, marriage period is all about compromise...as long as its the other person who does most of the compromising. Funny thing is I've noticed among those of us desis who have chosen outlier careers/ways of life (artist, musician, writer, etc) and actually done well, a profound level of self actualization is needed. I mean to weather the scorn of the community alone right. Thing is, this level of self belief does not always lend itself to being the most sensitive partners. Frankly our egos often get the better of us. Its sad really. I think there is a profound amount of self sabotage that goes into desi relationships, ESPECIALLY among those of the oulier set.
