Where did this get me? It didn't get me laid, put it that way. It took me many years to find out that girls weren't impressed with my Chess Championship. What do I do now? I've got a dead-beat job, and I post regularly onto Sepia Mutiny. But at least I get laid.

So kid, please enjoy your childhood, and don't be molded by your family. Play sports, don't be afraid of failure, do extra-curricular activities besides chess and Math Club, and associate with many different peoples. You're right. I didn't mean it the way I said it. I meant that he should TOTALLY listen to his parents. After all, they love him, and he's only 6. But when he's older, his parents should allow him to be curious about non-science fields and pursue other non-academic interests.

There was this one 3 year old kid on youtube, also Indian from India, I think. He knew all 50 state capitals in the USA. But you could tell that the boy's parents are making him memorize useless stuff just to impress folks. It was cringe-worthy.

I don't know why, but I want to smack that kid in the face with a fish.

For crying out loud, people, are you too dense too realize that children (and their parents) know how to use Google?! Goofing off for a local news spot (I'd wager the family is probably friends of friends of friends of some desperate producer trying to find something charming in these glum times) does not open a family--and a six-year-old to public ridicule!! Paradoxically, the meltdown has actually increased the demand for quants on Wall Street. I hope this is highly temporary. As the stimulus kicks in, however, I expect more physicists and engineers would go into (or stay in) careers in such useful things as green energy (solar, nuclear) or biotechnology (food, health) instead of 'finance'. And I hope to God the finance sector contracts relative to the rest of the economy in employment and output, ending the colosssal distortion it currently constitutes.

Pranav's parents need tohang out with their son, Pranav, a little bit less. This is embarrassing. I'd rather have a son who's more like Sanjaya than this kid. This is far more harmless, entertaining and adorable than the sexy Bollywood dancing and parroting of sexualized lyrics of filmy songs I see from the average 6 year old in the desi community. Pranav Veera was on the Today Show, and his interview with Ann Curry maybe found on msnbc.com. The kid is slightly bright - not that bright, but slightly slow. I don't think that an idiot savant is a genius, which is sort of what he is with his day/date recollections. When asked why he wanted to be an astronaut, his reply was that "[he] likes going into outerspace", and this got a big laugh from Ann and the other guy.

Also, he got Ann's 2011 b'day wrong. It's NOT on a Saturday. It's on a Sunday. he seemed very agitated about getting this wrong.

My point is: His parents are putting him through SO much stress by giving him TOO much attention and notifying the press about his abilities. Don't get me wrong: Knowing presidential tenures, days/dates, gravitational constant of Saturn, is all impressive at his age, but I strongly doubt that he knows anything than the recitation of words. I knew a kid who knew what 6 X 8 was, but he didn't know 5 X 8.

When the differential between Pranav's IQ and his peers diminish, the world will notice him a lot less. I hope that he makes it OK.
