Seriously though, somebody who isn't familiar with Bollywood would probably have a difficult time determining Mr. Khan's nationality.
After all, he is paler than 90% of the Indian population.

Not really - keep in mind, when you see him on TV or film, he is caked with makeup, and there are lights everywhere. When my sister-in law was engaged to my brother, she was working in Bombay for awhile, when one day Khan stopped by her building to visit a friend of his. She was surprised at how short he was and that he was darker in person than on screen.

Is Bollywood really that popular here??

Even if Bollywood isn't popular with the general population, regular viewers of TDS/TCR should be familiar with because of how often they references Indian cinema.

SRK he is not paler than 90% of the Indian population unless you were thinking of some sub population and then extrapolating to the rest of India. Who knows, he is most likely the darkest person in Bollywood. If you were talking about the other Khan, Feroze, I would have agreed. Here is Feroze in his native setting:

I am sure Will Smith and Denzel Washington face the same problem when they travel. After all, they are darker than 85% of the US population.

Haven't read the comments, but two nitpicks: 1) it might make for a good joke, but if that's Jon Stewart's idea of NJ, he needs to visit Edison; 2) maadarchod might be ubiquitous at this point, but there are plenty of better-suited cities to which he could have attributed it. Yeah yeah, alliteration, I know.

I saw SRK quite close a few days ago @ South Asian Carnival in Houston.

He is very fit, and quite an entertainer.

He is not that fair and not even that tall. For that matter, even Katrina Kaif (who is half white) is not extremely fair.

He does have a strong presence, and knows to work the crowd.

In movies, the extreme glare of the light along with makeup, makes them look them little different.

While I agree that the lights make actors seem much lighter in Hindi films, I'd also like to point out that those harsh lights are a choice and specifically used to make them seem fairer. Genelia D'Souza, for example, was in the medium brown range in her Southern films and in Jaane Tu, and looking at the promos for her new film, her face has been lit to make it seem much lighter. Watch SRK's films from the early 90s and you could see his real skin colour.

#6 TTCUSM, I was referring to the fact that after all the media coverage SRK has received in the US post his detention brouhaha, I'm pretty sure that people have an idea who he is. I wasn't generalizing about Bollywood, although a fair section of people probably know about it as well. And yeah, as several posters mentioned, SRK isn't really all that fair. It's the make-up in the movies that makes him look lighter. :)

So he is not really that light and the make and lights make him look light huh-are we sure about that....I think I need a few more posts about that...

What is the indian word they bleeped out? Was it in Tamil or Hindi? I'm always up for learning indian expletives.

According to ur statement close to 90 percent of the population...shud be 900 million ppl...are less light/dark as compared to SRK's skin tone in movies....
INDIA has a billion ppl...there ppl in the northeat who have mongloid features, who range in skin tones from the lightest specturm to the brownest...same thing with the kashmiris all the way in the north...though they tend to lean towards the lighter end.....and this pattern exhibits it self all over india...only difference being in certain regions certain shades tend to dominate over others...but you will tend to most shades in every region....

thats as dumb as saying....i thought 90% of chinese eyes were less slanted than yao mings....or something as irking-ly annoying...
